The seahorse has a curved neck, a long mouth, nose and head, and looks similar to a horse. It is a valuable traditional Chinese medicine with high economic value. So, how to raise seahorses?

1. Artificial propagation of parent fish

The hippocampus can choose healthy, complete, large and plump male and female individuals aged 1 ~ 2 years as parent fish. First, the male and female parent fish were raised separately in the breeding pond, with an area of about 4 square meters ~ 6 square meters, 1.5 meters deep and 2 meters wide, with good water quality and little change in water temperature. 20 ~ 30 eggs per square meter were released and fed with live baits such as amphipods, amphipods and prawns, with a small amount of artificial fresh bait for 3 ~ 4 times a day.

Second, water temperature

After a period of intensive culture, the gonads of the parent fish gradually matured, and the male hippocampus began to estrus at about 16 ℃, while the female hippocampus began to have estrus at about 19 ℃. Therefore, artificial heating is needed during the cultivation period. When the natural water temperature is above 20 ℃ and stable, male and female mixed culture and mating will be carried out, and the individuals will be made to lay eggs at 1:1.

Third, lighting

When the water temperature is 15 ℃ and the light is above 200Lux, more than 50% of the males begin to turn green, and the light is below 200Lux, which greatly reduces the phenomenon of oestrus. To the breeding season, light 5000Lux~10000Lux, has a certain role.

IV. Specific gravity

Using seawater with a specific gravity of more than 1.017 to cultivate pro-hippocampus, there are few strong diseases, and the survival rate is more than 80%. When the specific gravity is below 1.01, there are many diseases and high mortality.

V. breeding

The male sea horse has a nursery pouch on its abdomen, front or side. During mating, the female seahorse releases the eggs into the ovary sac, and the male is responsible for fertilizing the eggs. The males keep the fertilized eggs in the nursery sac until they are formed before releasing them into the sea.

The hippocampus is not hermaphroditic, it is just a male hatch. The breeding period of the hippocampus is from May to August every year, during which the seahorse mother lays her eggs in the pouch in the belly of the seahorse father. After 50-60 days, the young fish will be born from the seahorse father's pouch, so it is the seahorse father who is responsible for parenting. Although the father does not really have a child, the hatching still needs the father to complete. The father's pouch only acts as an incubator, and the eggs still come from the mother. The peak season is from August to September, when fishermen often use a net to catch.
