Grass turtle, also known as tortoise, golden tortoise, etc., is a subfamily of freshwater turtles. Omnivores are mainly distributed in Chinese mainland, Taiwan, Japan, South Korea and other countries and regions. They generally live in rivers, lakes and ponds. Grass turtles are often used as pet turtles in China, so when raising grass turtles, how to make them survive the winter safely?

First, how the little turtles survive the winter

If it is a baby turtle, it is not recommended to let the baby turtle hibernate, because in this way, the tortoise is very easy to die, the newly born tortoise is unable to withstand the severe cold in winter, and the mortality rate is very high. If you do not hibernate, try to keep the indoor temperature at about 28 degrees. When the sun is sufficient and the temperature is appropriate, you should take the grass turtle to bask in the sun to promote the development of the turtle shell.

If you are out of the baby turtle period and need to hibernate, you should first cover the container with wet sand and cover it with a newspaper. The turtle will sleep in the sand and replenish water once a week to keep the sand and the newspaper moist. During the hibernation of the grass turtle, try not to disturb the normal metabolism of the tortoise. If you disturb the tortoise at this time, it is easy to make the tortoise wake up repeatedly in the hibernating state, resulting in the death of the tortoise.

Matters needing attention in raising grass turtles

In the breeding of grass turtles, there are many things to pay attention to, otherwise it is easy to make grass turtles sick. The common problems are water quality, feeding and so on.

In the breeding of grass turtles, try to choose clean water, usually change the water once a day or two, if combined with the filtration system, you can basically keep the water only once a week or half a month. Change the water half an hour after feeding, and clean the container when changing the water.

When feeding grass turtles, try not to feed them with a single food, which can easily lead to malnutrition. Grass turtles are omnivorous animals and can be fed with different kinds of feed, fresh meat, and food diversity is the guarantee of turtle health. In addition, try not to feed too much when feeding, it is easy to cause indigestion.

These are some matters about grass turtle breeding. Although grass turtles have a long life, they are also very fragile. We must take care of them patiently when we breed them.
