Bonsai often grow many new branches and leaves. In order to maintain its beautiful shape, pruning must be carried out frequently. So what are the pruning methods of potted plants? Now I would like to introduce to you.

1. Topping

Remove the top of the branch with 3-4 leaflets in order to make it more branched and suitable for growing vegetative branches. It is important to note that only pinching branches works, but only pinching leaves without pinching branches will not work (for plants that originally have compound leaves, be sure to pay attention to this).

2. Truncation

For an one-year-growing branch, the degree of pruning is between topping and re-pruning. After pruning, retaining more than 1 / 2 of the branch can activate the growth of buds in the upper part of the branch, and also have the effect of making it more branched.

Third, re-cut

For an one-year-growing branch, after pruning, it can activate the dormant buds in the lower part of the branches and make them grow. The activated dormant buds may form new long branches in the future, or they may become short branches (flowering branches).

IV. Retraction

For a two-year-old long branch, when pruning, all the parts that grew in the previous year will be removed, which can play the purpose of replacing the branch group and promoting multiple branches. This is very useful for fruit trees, so that the parts of the fruit can be effectively controlled and are no longer extended year by year.

5. Pruning

The method of pruning should be determined according to the shape of the tree. if it is a cloud shape, the branches should be trimmed into a flat shape. Generally speaking, withered branches, parallel branches, cross branches and other branches that hinder beauty should be cut off in time.

VI. Root trimming

When turning the basin, combined with root pruning, the root system is too dense and too long should be trimmed. For tree species with well-developed roots, the dense roots should be thinned, the old roots should be removed, and a few new roots should be retained to turn the basin. Some old pile bonsai can be properly raised to increase its ornamental value when turning the basin.

Large-scale pruning methods such as shaving and high grafting are suitable for the renewal of old trees; at the same time, they can also be used in combination with grafting, and different kinds of plants may have different requirements.
