How to plant the latest peony seeds?
The fruit of peony is follicle, each follicle contains 1~7 seeds. When the seed matures, follicles dehisce and seed is released. Fruit maturity varies from place to place, such as Mudanjiang in Heilongjiang Province in early September, Heze in Shandong Province in late August, Luoyang in Henan Province in early and middle August, Yangzhou in Jiangsu Province around late August. Seeds should be sown immediately after harvest. With the delay of sowing time, the moisture content and germination rate of seeds decreased. The seed has double dormancy of hypocotyl and epicotyl. The soil temperature in autumn after sowing makes hypocotyl release dormancy and radicle develop and take root. The better the rooting situation in that year, the more vigorous the growth in the next year; if the sowing is too late, the ground temperature cannot release the hypocotyl dormancy and cannot produce very much, the germination rate in the spring of the next year is greatly reduced. After sowing and rooting in autumn, the dormancy of epicotyl can be released after a long period of low temperature in winter. The following spring, when the temperature rises and the humidity is suitable, the embryo is unearthed.
Method for harvesting peony seeds
When follicles turn yellow, they can be harvested, premature seeds do not become hot, and late seed coats turn black and hard and are not easy to emerge. Fruit maturity early and late, to harvest in batches, peel cracking out seeds, can be sown, do not expose seeds, so that seed coat hardens, affecting emergence. If you can't sow in time, sand storage moisture treatment is feasible, but you must take out the seeds before they take root.
The time of planting peony seeds
Peony must be harvested in the same year that timely sowing, such as Heze area in late August to late September sowing, if late in September, then that year can not take root, the next spring germination rate will be greatly reduced; and, even if the emergence, because the seedling root system is not developed, difficult to resist spring drought, easy to die. Therefore, Heze several spring sowing experiments, all failed.
Sowing method of peony seeds
1, seed treatment: before sowing, to be sown seeds to remove shriveled particles and impurities, and then water selection method to remove unfilled seeds. Although the seed coat of peony is thinner than peony, it is easier to absorb water and sprout, but if the seed is treated before sowing, the germination rate will be more orderly, and the germination rate will be greatly improved, often reaching more than 80%. The method is to soak seeds in warm water at 50℃ for 24 hours, and sow them immediately after taking them out.
2, the whole ridge sowing: sowing seedling land to apply sufficient base fertilizer, deep turning leveling If the soil is relatively moist suitable for sowing, can directly do ridge sowing; if the moisture is poor, should be fully irrigated, and then do ridge sowing. The width of the ridge is about 50 cm, the distance between the ridges is 30 cm, the seeds are sown according to the row spacing of 6 cm and the grain spacing of 3 cm; if the seeds are sufficient, it is feasible to withdraw the seeds, and the grain spacing is not less than 3 cm; after sowing, cover them with wet soil, and the thickness is about 2 cm. About 50 kg of seed per 666.7 m2 and about 100 kg of sowing. After sowing, cover with plastic film, sprout in the spring of the following year and withdraw. It is also feasible to drill, with a strip spacing of 40 cm, a grain spacing of 3 cm, and a soil covering of 5~6 cm; or to conduct hole sowing, with a hole spacing of 20~30 cm, 4~5 seeds per hole, and a soil pile of 10~20 cm after sowing, so as to prevent cold and preserve moisture. Rake flat before budding the following spring.
Note: The seed method cannot be used for the propagation of seedlings because the offspring produced by planting peony horticultural varieties will segregate and cannot maintain the excellent characters of the original varieties.
