Panax notoginseng is a shade-loving plant. Like the warm winter and cool summer environment, afraid of the cold and heat. Like moisture but afraid of stagnant water, soil water content of 22% to 40% is appropriate. It can grow under the planting conditions of no more than 35 ℃ in summer, 5 ℃ below zero in winter and 18-25 ℃ in winter.

Panax notoginseng has loose requirements on soil and a wide range of adaptation, but it is better to use sandy loam soil with loose soil and good drainage. Areas where sticky, sandy and low-lying areas are prone to stagnant water should not be planted. Avoid continuous cropping, soil pH 4.5-8.

One-year-old Panax notoginseng has only one palmate compound leaf. In the second year, there are 2-3 palmately compound leaves, each consisting of 5-7 leaflets, which begin to bolt and blossom. Three or four-year-old cattle have 3-5 palmately compound leaves, each of which consists of 7 leaflets and a few as many as 9 leaflets. For Panax notoginseng for more than five years, the number of compound leaves can reach 6. The number of palmately compound leaves in each year is affected by the growth and development conditions, the nutrition is sufficient, the development conditions are suitable, and the number of palmately compound leaves is large.

Every year, Panax notoginseng emerges from February to March in the producing area, and the emergence period is 10-15 days. After Panax notoginseng thrives, it enters the leaf expansion stage, and the stem and leaf grow faster at the initial stage of leaf expansion, and the plant height usually reaches 2 × 3 of the normal plant height in 15 to 20 days, then the stem and leaf grow slowly, and once the sprouts grow out, there are no seedlings on the ground once the stems and leaves of the spores are damaged.

Panax notoginseng is sensitive to light, like oblique, scattered, diffuse light, avoid strong light. The general transmittance should be 30%. The light is too weak, the plant grows too long, the leaf is soft, the main root grows slowly, and it is easy to get sick. If the light is too strong, the plant is short and the leaves are easy to burn.

The seeds of Panax notoginseng are post-mature and stored under moist conditions before they can complete physiological post-ripening and sprout. The optimum temperature for seed germination is about 20 ℃. The life span of seeds under natural conditions is about 15 days, and the seeds will lose their vitality once they are dried. Therefore, it is appropriate to sow along with picking or stratification treatment.
