Last Updated: 2024/11/10, Salvia miltiorrhiza, also known as Radix Salviae Miltiorrhizae, etc., is a dicotyledonous perennial erect herb of Salvia, which has the effects of removing blood stasis, promoting blood circulation, regulating menstruation and so on.

Salvia miltiorrhiza, also known as red ginseng, purple salvia miltiorrhiza, red root, etc., is a perennial upright herb belonging to dicotyledonous plant Labiatae. Its roots are used as medicine. It has the effects of removing blood stasis, promoting blood circulation, regulating menstruation, etc. Due to the continuous exploitation of wild salvia miltiorrhiza, the wild resources are on the verge of extinction at present. Let's take a look at where Salvia miltiorrhiza originates.

Where is Danshen produced?

Danshen fleshy root hypertrophy, stem height 40~80 cm, leaves are often odd-pinnate compound leaves, cymes 6 flowers or more flowers, black nuts oval, flowering 4~8 months, see fruit after flowering, except Heilongjiang, Jilin, Inner Mongolia northern alpine areas almost all provinces, regions, cities are distributed, produced in Hebei, Shanxi, Shandong, Henan, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Anhui, Jiangxi and Hunan, etc., also distributed in Japan.

Environment of Danshen

Salvia miltiorrhiza likes to grow in mild climate, sufficient light and humid air environment. The area with annual average temperature of 17.1℃ and average relative humidity of 77% is the best planting area. It grows well in fertile sandy loam, but it has wide adaptability to soil pH, neutral, slightly acidic and slightly alkaline. Wild Salvia miltiorrhiza grows mostly on roadside, slope and riverside.

Reproduction methods of Salvia miltiorrhiza

1. Root-division propagation: When harvesting in autumn, select the roots of Salvia miltiorrhiza with diameter of 0.7~1 cm, purple color, no diseases and insect pests, and full development as seed roots, and store them in wet sand until the next spring. From March to April in early spring, cut the seed root into 4~6 cm segments. According to the specification of row spacing depth of 35 cm ×25 cm ×6 cm, put the cut seed root vertically into the hole, one hole for one section, big head facing upward, do not turn upside down, cover the soil about 2 cm, not too thick, otherwise it will affect the emergence. About 50 kilograms of seed roots are used per mu. With root section planting, flowering late, difficult to receive seeds in the year, but the root growth faster, high yield of medicinal materials.

2. Reed-head propagation: selecting healthy and disease-free plants to cut off thick roots for medicinal purposes when Danshen is harvested, and planting fine roots with reed-head and heart leaves as seedlings. Large seedlings can be divided into 2 to 4 plants according to the natural growth conditions of buds and roots, and then planted. Wild Salvia miltiorrhiza can also be dug, thick roots cut for medicine, fine roots together with reeds planted together, plant, row spacing and root-splitting propagation method is the same, the time should be in late autumn or early spring. Reeds are used for propagation and can be harvested in the next year after planting. The production cycle is short and the economic benefit is good.

3. Cuttage propagation: From June to July in the north and April to May in the south, select healthy and disease-free Salvia miltiorrhiza branches and cut them into small sections of 13~16 cm long. The lower incision should be close to the stem nodes and be horseshoe shaped. Cut off the lower leaves, insert the cuttings obliquely into the seedbed according to the row spacing of 20×10 cm, the depth is 1/2~2/3 of the cuttings, cover the soil and compact, and leave 1~2 leaves on the ground. Cut and insert at the same time, not for a long time, otherwise it will affect the survival rate of cuttings. After cutting, keep the soil moist and shade properly. New roots can grow from the lowest stem nodes in 15~20 days. When the roots are 3 cm long, place them in the field.

4, seed reproduction: Danshen seeds are small, germination rate is about 70%, direct seeding method often seedlings are not uniform, so choose seedling transplanting method. Seeds should be selected after June mature seeds, pick with sowing or September sowing. Generally in March in the seedbed sowing, drilling and sowing can be. Sowing row spacing 30×20 cm, ditch depth 1~1.3 cm, seeds mixed with river sand, evenly scattered in the ditch, covered with soil 0.5~0.7 cm. Sowing can spread seeds evenly on the ground, with a foot over, so that the seeds and soil close, do not have to cover the soil. The planting amount per mu is about 0.5 kg. Cover with plastic film for heat preservation and moisture retention. When the local temperature reaches about 20℃, seedlings emerge in 15~20 days. When seedlings have 3 to 5 true leaves, if they are found to be too dense, they should be thinned, and the seedlings can be planted and cultivated outside. After sowing, it can be transplanted after 2 months of growth.
