Eucalyptus belongs to the myrtle family, eucalyptus genus, evergreen plant, alias are white diesel tree, mango tree, Gary, big-leaf eucalyptus, big-leaf eucalyptus, oil Gary, big-leaf eucalyptus and so on. Eucalyptus is native to Australia and is one of the three world-famous fast-growing tree species (poplar, pine and eucalyptus). At present, more than 90 countries and regions in the five continents of the world have been widely introduced, accounting for about 1 / 3 of the artificial forest area in the world.

Planting characteristics of eucalyptus

1, strong adaptability: eucalyptus like warm climate, but not resistant to hot and humid climate, poor growth of overheated climate; eucalyptus like light, a little shade can affect the growth rate; eucalyptus is not strong cold tolerance, can only withstand the low temperature of about-7 ℃ for a short time, if in-5 ℃ after 2-3 days will produce varying degrees of frost injury, light twigs die, heavy ones will die whole plant; eucalyptus likes fertile and humid acid soil.

2. Fast growth: eucalyptus is the fastest growing tree species in the world. During the peak growing season, eucalyptus can grow 3 centimeters in a day, 1 meter in a month, and 10 meters in a year.

3. Fewer diseases and insect pests: because eucalyptus is an exotic tree species, the history of planting in a large area in China is not long, so there are few large-scale diseases and insect pests, which is much better than that of poplar. However, in recent years, the situation of diseases and insect pests has a tendency to expand and develop.

4. the rotation period is very short: the rotation period of Scandinavian spruce plantation is 70 years. The rotation period of Pinus massoniana plantation is 20-25 years, and that of Cunninghamia lanceolata is 15-20 years. The rotation period of eucalyptus plantation in southern provinces is 5-7 years, especially in Leizhou Peninsula, some even shortened to 3-4 years.

5, a wide range of uses: eucalyptus wood red, shiny, no special smell, texture crisscross, dense structure, hard material, easy to bend, very suitable for cooperative bending wood. It can be used as furniture, floor, lathe, tool handle and agricultural tools, etc. Its fiber is a good raw material for papermaking, small diameter wood has high combustion value, can be used as fuel, and has a wide range of applications.

Planting environment requirements

Eucalyptus is adaptable and can grow in thin-ridged soil. But only under suitable soil conditions can its fast-growing characteristics be brought into full play.

1. Soil: eucalyptus likes fertilizer, which generally requires deep, loose and fertile red soil or latosol, and grows well when the soil is neutral or slightly acidic.

2. Illumination: eucalyptus is a light-loving tree species, which needs strong sunlight to grow well in the whole growth period, and the growth of sunny slope is better than that of shady slope.

3. Altitude: altitude should also be taken into account in mountain afforestation. For every 100m increase in altitude, the temperature will drop by 0.6 ℃, and cold tolerance should be considered. Generally, the altitude should not exceed 350m.

4. Temperature: the annual extreme temperature below-5 ℃ is not suitable for planting eucalyptus.

Planting technique of Eucalyptus

The planting density (row spacing) of common eucalyptus species was 1.5m × 3m, 148 trees per mu, 2m × 3m, 117m or 3m × 3m per mu, 89 trees per mu.

The best planting month of eucalyptus is from February to June every year, during which the survival rate of eucalyptus is high and the trees grow vigorously.
