Calla is a perennial stout herb belonging to Calla genus of Araceae. It is a potted flower loved by flower lovers. Its flowers and leaves can be used as cut flowers. Dwarf and floret potted plants are used to place steps, windowsills, balconies and mirrors. They are particularly vivid and lovely. Let's take a look at how to raise calla in hydroponic culture.

Can a calla lily grow in water?

Calla lilies can grow in water. Calla chinensis is a wet plant, its rhizome retains aquatic plant genetic genes, aquatic vascular aeromatous tissue is relatively developed, can adapt to indoor container static culture under pollution-free cultivation conditions, but attention should always be paid to maintaining the clean state and inorganic nature of the nutrient solution to maintain the necessary dissolved oxygen level in the solution, which is the decisive factor for successful cultivation, otherwise, it will inevitably lead to the root rot and death of cultivated plants.

Selection of Calla Varieties

Culture calla usually choose white stalk calla, safflower calla and honeysuckle calla, etc., which are relatively short and compact plants. For large plants, green stalk species or yellow calla can be selected.

1. White-pedunculated calla lily: The tubers of white-pedunculated calla lily are small, grow slowly, but bloom early, have many flowers, white pedicels, large and round spathes, white-green petioles at the base, grow slowly, white spathes, tubers with a diameter of 1-2 cm can bloom.

2. Safflower Calla Lily: The bracts of Safflower Calla Lily are rose red, the leaves are lanceolate, dwarf, flowering in June.

3. Silver star calla lily: Silver star calla lily is also called spotted calla lily. The plant height is about 60 cm. The leaves are large, with white spots on them. The buddha bud is yellow or milky white. The base has purple spots. The natural flowering period is from July to August and dormancy in winter.

How to grow calla lily in water culture

1. Solution preparation: Calla hydroponic nutrient solution can adopt the following nutrient solution formula: calcium nitrate 800 g, potassium dihydrogen phosphate 210 g, magnesium sulfate 250 g, potassium nitrate 500 g, ammonium nitrate 30 g, iron salt of ethylenediamine tetraacetate 10 g, manganese sulfate 2 g, zinc sulfate 1 g, boric acid 1.3 g, copper sulfate 0.15 g, ammonium molybdate 0.1 g.

2, solution management: in the whole growth period of calla lily, control the pH value of nutrient solution between 5.6-6.5, nutrient solution supply mainly according to weather conditions and plant size, usually 2-3 times a day, to ensure that the culture substrate layer is wet, there is a shallow layer at the bottom of the tank.

3. Plant management: Calla plant management is relatively simple, mainly stripping yellow leaves and part of outer leaves. The purpose of stripping outer leaves is to avoid crowded leaves affecting lighting and ventilation, and flower pedicels extending out. Diseases and insect pests mainly include bacterial soft rot, aphids, red spiders, etc. Bacterial soft rot can harm leaves, petioles and tubers, mainly transmitted by tubers with bacteria. Bordeaux solution 500 times spray can be used for prevention and control at the beginning of disease.

4. Precautions

① Calla lily growth requires fresh air, Calla lily is very sensitive to soot and toxic gases, so culture Calla lily should be placed away from the kitchen to avoid smoke pollution. Calla lilies need plenty of sunlight during their growing season, so they should be exposed to the sun as much as possible in winter.

② When cultivating calla lilies, pay attention to air circulation. If the ventilation is poor and the temperature is higher than the natural temperature, it will lead to pests such as powdery medium, aphid and leaf roller. If an omethoate 1500-2000 times solution is found, it will be killed.

③ Calla hydroponics is essentially anoxic cultivation, so zero pollution must be achieved. If the nutrient solution is contaminated by microorganisms, it will consume dissolved oxygen in the water. Therefore, maintaining the clean state and inorganic properties of the nutrient solution and maintaining the necessary dissolved oxygen level in the nutrient solution are the keys to hydroponic calla lily.
