Oncidium is an extremely beautiful and ornamental orchid, also known as auspicious orchid, dance orchid, golden butterfly orchid and so on, which is the general name of the genus Oncidium of Orchidaceae. There are more than 750 native species in the world. Most of the varieties used in commerce are hybrids, which are suitable for vase in home and office, and are also high-grade materials for processing bouquets and small baskets. Let's take a look at the breeding methods of Oncidium.

Growth habits of Oncidium

Oncidium originated from the United States, Mexico, Guyana and Peru, with thick leaves in a warm and hot environment, the optimum temperature for growth is 18-25 ℃, and the winter temperature is not lower than 12 ℃. Thin leaf type and flag leaf type Oncidium prefer cool climate, the suitable temperature for growth is 10: 22 ℃, and the winter temperature is not lower than 8 ℃. Like humid and semi-shady environment, in addition to watering to increase substrate humidity, foliar and ground water spraying is more important, increasing air humidity is more beneficial to the growth of leaves and flower stems.

Propagation methods of Oncidium

Oncidium is a compound-stemmed orchid, which will grow into a seed plant after it is grown up, and can be cut off from the mother plant when it has a pseudobulb. Cut off the false bulb with 2 buds and plant it directly in the basin of water moss to maintain high air humidity and quickly restore new buds and roots. Ramet propagation is generally carried out after flowering or in spring and autumn, and it is best to combine with changing pots before new buds germinate in spring.

Culture methods of Oncidium

1. Soil: Oncidium likes a relatively dry environment and can be covered with a layer of broken tiles and bricks at the bottom of the pot. the culture medium should choose a medium with good drainage and permeability. 4 parts of broken fern root, 1 part of peat soil, 2 parts of broken charcoal, 2 parts of vermiculite and 1 part of water moss can be mixed.

2. Lighting: Oncidium prefers semi-shady environment and generally receives sufficient direct sunlight in winter, which is beneficial to the flowering of the plant. Shading measures should be taken in other seasons to prevent leaves from being burned, and the shading rate of 40-50% is more appropriate.

3. Temperature: Oncidium should not grow in a low temperature environment. The growth temperature of Oncidium should not be lower than 12 ℃, and the suitable growth temperature is 18-25 ℃. The growth temperature of thin-leaf species Oncidium should not be lower than 8 ℃, and the suitable growth temperature is 10-22 ℃.

4. Moisture: Oncidium likes to dry. When the soil surface is relatively dry, it should be watered thoroughly. It is necessary to increase the amount of water in the growing season, which can be watered once in the morning and evening, reduce the amount of water and frequency in winter, promote flowering, and stop watering when the temperature is lower than 10 ℃.

5. Fertilization: Oncidium is applied with a low concentration of nitrogen: phosphorus: potassium at 1:1:1 compound fertilizer every 20 days from spring to autumn, or spraying leaves with a concentration of 0.05-0.1%. Do not apply fertilizer when the temperature is low in winter.

Points for attention of Oncidium

1. Oncidium culture usually needs to wait for about half of the substrate to dry before watering, like high air humidity, often spray water to the leaves during air drying, and it is best to put the flowerpot on a shallow plate filled with pebbles and water.

2. Oncidium pot change is usually carried out after flowering, non-flowering plants can be chosen before the growth period, such as early spring and autumn when the weather becomes cool, the cultivation materials should be changed together, and the pot change can be combined with ramets.

3. Oncidium culture should pay attention to shading in summer and cool down in time when the temperature is too high. In midsummer and autumn, water should be thoroughly watered once a day, that is, until the basin bottom hole comes out of the water.
