Lotus is an aquatic plant. It cannot live without water. The fear of water means that if the water level is too high, it is difficult to blossom, or even the whole plant, due to different varieties, the requirements for water depth are also different. For example, the red lotus growing in the East Lake of Wuhan can only see a few floating leaves at a depth of 1.5 meters. The standing leaves are all submerged in the water, and they cannot blossom without standing leaves. If the standing leaves are submerged for more than 10 days, they will be in danger of drowning. Even if they are submerged for 3 to 5 days, they can still survive, but it is not easy to blossom in that year.

The water level suitable for lotus growth is generally no more than 1 meter, while the water level for medium and small flowers should be between 15 and 20 centimeters. If the growing season is short of water, if the soil is not yet dry (still moist), timely irrigation can recover, but the growth will also be affected to a certain extent; if the soil is dry to crack, the growth stagnates, the leaves become scorched, and it is difficult to revive.

Although the lotus depends on water for growth, it has different requirements for water at different growth stages. When planting lotus root, the water should not be too much, and it is not necessary to water immediately after planting. When the mud surface begins to crack slightly after 3-5 days, a small amount of water should be watered. At this time, it has not yet germinated, the amount of water evaporation is very little, and it will not hurt the plant because of drought. And controlling the amount of water can not only avoid floating lotus root, but also increase the mud temperature, which is beneficial to early growth. In short, the early stage should keep the water outlet of floating leaves and standing leaves as standard, and gradually raise the water level with the growth of standing leaves. The summer temperature is high and the growth is rapid, so the pot lotus should be watered once every two days. The temperature of the water used in summer should be roughly similar to that in the tank. The formation of new lotus root in late autumn and early winter will be carried out during the dormant period and can be kept in shallow water, but it cannot be without water, otherwise the new lotus root will be dried, which is bound to have an impact on the following year. In a word, water in lotus management is the key, and we should follow its law in order to achieve satisfactory results.
