Impatiens balsamina is an annual herb of the genus Impatiens native to China. It has a long history of cultivation in China. The varieties are varied and colorful. The common ones are pink, white, red and so on. In addition to being often called henna when I was young, it also has many names, such as buttercup, bamboo marigold and so on. According to the difference of varieties, the adult plant height of impatiens ranges from 40 to 100 cm, blossoms in June every year, and blossoms until early autumn September. It has the characteristics of simple planting and strong ability of self-reproduction.

Growth habits of Impatiens balsamina

Impatiens like warm and sunny growth environment, cold tolerance is not good, but has a strong adaptability, tolerance to transplant, less diseases and insect pests, tolerance to barren. However, it does not like the maintenance environment that is too wet and lack of light conditions, and there will be problems such as overgrowth, emaciation, lodging and few flowers due to lack of light and stagnant water. After having a basic understanding of impatiens, the editor will explain to you how to grow and maintain it:

Sowing and planting methods of Impatiens

1. Sowing time

Impatiens is mainly propagated by seeds and is sown 3-9 a year. If flower friends in the south want to plant, they can begin to prepare next month, while flower friends in the north are suitable for sowing in April and generally blossom about 3 months after sowing.

2. Allocation of soil

Impatiens does not like the soil environment that is too wet, so we should pay more attention to the drainage of pot soil when planting potted plants. It is recommended to use slightly acidic fertile soil with good loose drainage, such as rotten leaf soil, garden soil, vermiculite and rotten chicken manure fertilizer, which should be mixed evenly according to the ratio of 3 to 1; or rotten leaf soil, peat, river sand and rotten sheep manure should be mixed according to the same proportion as above.

If there is an insecticide, it is best to sprinkle some insecticide when dispensing the soil. The editor did not deal with the soil when he started planting flowers in the early years, resulting in a lot of bugs in the family in summer. It would be terrible to think about it. Those without insecticides can be fried, and high temperatures can kill eggs.

3. Seed treatment

The seeds of impatiens are brown spherical granules. Before sowing, you can soak the seeds in 40 degrees warm water for 6 hours, or soak them in cold water for a day, then remove and drain the water. By soaking the seeds, the germination rate can be increased and the germination can be more orderly.

4. Sowing method

Before we pot the impatiens, we need to cover the bottom of the flowerpot with a layer of water. We can use ceramsite or break the clay pot into small pieces. Then fill the configured soil matrix into the position of about 8 minutes in the flowerpot and shake it gently a few times, at which time the soil will sink slightly. Then pour the soil in the basin thoroughly, if there is no fried soil, it is best to add some fungicides to the irrigated water to disinfect the soil.

Then put the seeds on the surface of the basin soil, usually put 4 seeds in a 1-gallon flowerpot, too much is not conducive to growth, if the distance between the seedlings is too close, it is easy to get sick and moldy. After the seeds are placed, sprinkle the surface gently with a thin layer of dry soil. To wet the topsoil with a spray can, it is best to choose a spray can with a fine hole and a soft spray.

After sowing, if the ambient temperature is less than 20 degrees, the mouth of the flowerpot can be covered with a transparent film, and only many holes are pierced in the film for ventilation to prevent excessive water vapor and moldy seeds and seedlings. After piercing the hole, you can move it to a well-ventilated shade and wait for it to germinate. If the sowing temperature can reach about 20 degrees, there is no need to cover the film, during the period to keep the soil moist, see the soil dry a little spraying water, 7-10 days can sprout.

5. Transplant into the pot

After seeing the seeds sprouting, flower friends should move them to astigmatism for maintenance, and pay attention to the strong light to prevent the seedlings from drying in the sun. When the seedlings grow 4 true leaves, the seedlings can be dug up with the soil and transplanted into a new flowerpot.

New flowerpots are planted on the soil in the same steps as when sowing, except that only one seedling should be planted in a flowerpot. Impatiens is very resistant to transplanting and can easily survive whenever it is carried out, but it is best to take part of the original soil with you when transplanting. After transplanting, plant the flowerpot in a cool and ventilated place for 3 days and move to a place with plenty of light to let it bask in the sun and accelerate the growth of branches and leaves.

When the impatiens fruit is ripe, it is easier to burst and eject the seeds, so if you want to keep the seeds for sowing in the coming year, you need to harvest the seeds when the seeds are not fully mature, and the harvest time is usually when the seed shell is slightly yellowed. The seeds of impatiens are very resistant to storage, and the germination rate will not decrease after 1 or 2 years, so after the flower friends have collected the seeds, there is no need to leave the seedlings sown in the coming year.
