There are many varieties of broad-leaved mahonia, common with dense thorns broad-leaved mahonia, its leaf edge thorns are dense; thornless broad-leaved mahonia, leaf edge without thorns and other varieties, also commonly used to make bonsai. The ten mahonia stems are clustered, the branches and leaves are sparse, the leaves are changeable, and the seasons are evergreen. Especially when the old leaves turn orange red and the new green leaves, red and green contrast, very beautiful and elegant, it is a leaf bonsai that can be enjoyed all the year round, and also has the effect of viewing flowers and fruits.

Breeding and selection:

Mahonia can be used cuttage, ramets or seeding propagation. Cuttage propagation is divided into hardwood cuttings and softwood cuttings. Hardwood cuttings should be carried out in early spring in March. Cut 1 to 2-year-old healthy branches as cuttings, 20 cm long, cut and insert them in semi-shady land, moist and loose soil, or insert them in plain sand and vermiculite. Young cuttings can be carried out in the rainy season, cutting the fully developed and unlignified semi-mature branches of the current year as cuttings, 15 cm long, and inserting them on the sandy seedbed at a depth of 12 to 23 cm. When cutting, use bamboo chopsticks to drill holes in the seedbed first, then insert the cuttings bb, press tightly with fingers at the base, make the soil and cuttings closely connected, irrigate enough water, set up a shed for shade, water frequently when it is dry and high temperature, spray with a fine hole spray pot in the morning and evening, keep the soil moist, take root and germinate in about 50 days, transplant and cultivate large seedlings in the spring of the following year.

Mahonia fortunei is mostly wild in shrubs under mountain stream forest. Old piles with peculiar roots can be selected to dig, cut branches, cultivate in the ground first, cultivate embryos, wait for new branches and leaves to sprout, and then process in pots in spring of the following year. This dry thick short, branched, elegant posture, can be made into a beautiful view of leaf bonsai.

Planting:

Before planting, the plants should be soaked in clean water for about half an hour to improve the survival rate. When planting, mud should be applied to the roots and stems, and then planted in loose and breathable sandy soil. After that, keep the soil moist without ponding. Spray water frequently on the plants to increase the humidity of the air and ensure survival. With a short time, bud eye will grow a lot of new buds, you can choose a few ideal strong bud position to retain, the rest of the bud erased. In the future, water and fertilizer management should be strengthened to make the plants grow vigorously. In the spring of the second year, the branches sprouted in the previous year were appropriately truncated to promote the emergence of new robust branches.

In the process of making broad-leaved Mahonia latifolia bonsai, directional buds can also be cultivated by spraying water frequently when a certain part of the plant needs buds, and it will not take long for new buds to grow in this position.

Trim:

Mahonia latifolia grows rapidly. After 2 to 3 years of cultivation, the branches can be truncated, and some damaged leaves should be removed in time to keep the tree beautiful. If you don't cultivate bonsai for viewing fruits, you should cut off the residual flowers after flowering to avoid consuming too much nutrients and affecting growth.

Styling:

Mahonia latifolia can be processed into different forms of bonsai such as jungle type, double dry type, single rod type, inclined dry type, water type and cliff type. Its modeling method is mainly pruning, supplemented by panza. Panza time should be carried out after lignification of new branches, because at this time the flexibility of branches is strong, not easy to break, and new branches due to soft and fragile, very easy to break, so do not make Panza modeling. The trunk and old branches are relatively brittle and hard, so they can only be pulled or twisted properly with metal wires or palm wires within a certain range to avoid breaking the branches. Because of its large leaves, the crown more natural style modeling, in order to show its natural beauty.

The processing of ten Mahonia bonsai is similar to that of NanTianZhu, mainly pruning and planting, generally not climbing. Processing should be carried out before germination in spring, so that branches and leaves up and down uneven, dense, rich sense of hierarchy. Tree, with a multi-stem and root type of the most common, but also a combination of planting type and straight stem. A multi-dry and planting type should pay attention to the height, density and changes before and after. The root lifting method can be used to lift the taproot properly when planting, pile soil on the basin surface, and gradually remove the pile soil when watering later, so that the root is exposed.

Turn over the basin:

Turn over the pot once a year before germination in spring. The pot soil should be sandy soil with rich humus, loose ventilation and good drainage.
