Organic agriculture: not just growing vegetables, the establishment of ecological trust is the root.
Fujita, a Japanese housewife living in Beijing, receives organic vegetables delivered to her home once a week, although she always finds them much tastier than ordinary vegetables sold on the market. But it wasn't until she personally visited the vegetable production sites that she was able to unravel the delicious mystery.
In Daqiuzhuang, Jinghai County, Tianjin City, more than 100 kilometers away from Beijing, vegetables of various varieties thrive in 30 solar greenhouses. Different from what you see on weekdays, the greenhouse here is lit on one side and brick walls built with thick mud and red bricks on three sides. To enter each shed, you need to go through a long corridor.
"Each brick wall is 5 meters wide at the bottom and 2 meters wide at the top. This thickness is for better insulation. And the tunnel is used to prevent temperature loss and to isolate flying insects." Fuping Chuangyuan planting demonstration base technical director Chen Lin said. Not only that, the vegetables here never use herbicides, pesticides and soil disinfectants, the soil is not only deeply turned 40 cm before planting, but also all homemade organic fertilizer. On the climbing vines, there were many small paper bags containing small insects and yellow and blue sticky paper, which were used to release natural enemies and trap pests.
"China's environmental pollution and food safety situation are very similar to Japan 40 years ago. I have been promoting eco-organic agriculture in Japan for many years and I look forward to this model being promoted in China." said Fujita Kazuyoshi, founder of the Earth Protection Association.
The 40-year-old Earth Protection Association Co., Ltd. in Japan is the partner and technology provider of this base. The company, which mainly produces organic ecological agricultural products, had sales of 1 billion yuan in Japan last year, 2500 contracted farmers and 90,000 consumer members.
In May 2013, ecological organic vegetables produced in strict accordance with the technical scheme provided by the Earth Protection Association were officially listed for the Beijing market. "Twice a year, we detect all pesticide residues, and none of the more than 200 pesticide residue indicators of organic vegetables we produce is detected." Fuping Chuangyuan Deputy General Manager Dai Mingliang proudly said. Due to strict management of chemical fertilizers and pesticides, vegetables grown organically have high labor costs and land fertility costs, and sell for 7-10 times as much as ordinary vegetables. Nevertheless, these vegetables are still welcomed by many consumers.
"Food safety is the common aspiration of Chinese producers and consumers, but in China, there are still problems such as weak ecological agriculture foundation and unestablished trust relationship between producers and consumers." In Japan, Fujita Kazuyoshi is known as the "Godfather of Organic Agriculture." Advocating organic vegetable cultivation is not only an effective way to solve various environmental pollution and food safety problems in China and protect consumers 'personal health, but also to effectively improve the income and social status of agricultural practitioners.
Many farmers in Daqiuzhuang have benefited from this. Zang, a peasant woman in her 50s, said she had earned only 4,000 or 5,000 yuan a year by growing corn and other grain on her land. Three years ago, she transferred more than 2 mu of saline-alkali land under her name to Fuping Chuangyuan Farm at an annual price of about 800 yuan, and went to the farm as a migrant worker. Her income reached more than 30,000 yuan in that year.
On the one hand, it is the rapid growth of consumer reputation and predictable huge market potential; on the other hand, it is the obvious improvement of farmers 'income. The demonstration effect of the base has attracted attention from all walks of life. People interested in developing ecological organic agriculture have come in succession. Zhao Yuanchun from Xuchang rural area of Henan Province came here for special study. She said,"I hope to find a way to help parents and villagers get rid of poverty." Today, Fuping Chuangyuan's technology and development model have been successfully replicated to farms in Beijing and Fujian.
Over the past three years, Fuping Chuangyuan has opened organic vegetable sales counters in four high-end supermarkets in Beijing and provided long-term home delivery services to more than 200 families in Beijing. From January to June this year alone, the company has sold more than 100,000 catties of vegetables, and almost all the production capacity of the base has been digested. Shen Dongshu, chairman of the company, predicts that with the continuous improvement of market demand and consumer recognition, the cultivation technology of the Earth Protection Association will be replicated and promoted to more regions, and the number of members of Fuping Chuangyuan is expected to reach 10,000 in a year.
Fujita said that in his view, organic agriculture is not just about growing vegetables, but also building trust based on ecology. In Japan, consumers who buy organic vegetables from "Daichi" experience a transition from a high-consumption group to a general group. He said the power of example was crucial. "Hopefully, consumers in China who can afford to buy organic vegetables will recognize more about the health and social benefits of their purchases, not just because they account for a smaller share of spending."
