Last Updated: 2024/11/05, Green onion is a kind of spring onion. There are many seedlings and transplants in the producing areas of green onions in northern China, and most of the main producing areas in the middle and lower reaches of the Yellow River are sown in autumn, but it is necessary to strictly control the seedlings no more than 3 leaves before winter, and most of them are sown in spring to the south of the Yellow River. When the local temperature reaches 7 ℃, we should pay close attention to sowing.

Scallion is a kind of onion. There are many seedlings transplanted in the production area of scallion in northern China. The main production area in the middle and lower reaches of the Yellow River is mostly autumn sowing. However, it is necessary to strictly control the seedlings before winter not to exceed 3 leaves. The south of the Yellow River is mostly spring sowing. When the local temperature reaches 7℃, we should pay close attention to sowing. Let's take a look at the planting time of scallion below!

Green onion planting conditions

1. Soil: Scallion is suitable for loam cultivation with pH 6.5 -7.5. The seedling site requires fertilizer and loose, sufficient soil moisture, prevention of topsoil hardening during seedling emergence, topdressing once when seedlings begin to grow rapidly, and control soil moisture 10-15 days before planting to prevent excessive growth and lodging.

2, fertilizer: onions like fertilizer, and require nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium balanced application. In the early growth stage, nitrogen fertilizer is required more, and in the late growth stage, phosphorus and potassium fertilizer are required more. Special attention should be paid to the application of phosphorus fertilizer, because lack of phosphorus will lead to poor plant growth and yield reduction. At the same time, attention should be paid to the sulfur content of onion field. The lack of sulfur in soil will affect the yield increase effect.

3. Temperature: Scallion has resistance, both cold and heat resistance. Although temperature has little effect on the growth of Chinese onion in general, suitable temperature conditions are beneficial to high quality and high yield.

4. Moisture: There are few root hairs in scallion, and the ability to absorb water and fertilizer is poor. Most of the roots are distributed in the surface layer of the soil. They like humidity and require higher soil moisture. However, the roots are afraid of waterlogging. High temperature and high humidity are easy to cause root death.

5. Light: Scallion has moderate requirements for light intensity. Because the cylindrical leaves of scallion can still get good light conditions under the condition of dense planting, strong light is not needed. Strong light has adverse effects on the growth of scallion, which will cause aging of leaves, increase of fiber, decrease of quality, and even loss of edible value.

The planting time of green onions

1. Autumn planting time: sowing in early September of the first year, overwintering with seedlings, planting in early and middle May of the second year in summer, harvesting before winter, hoarding or overwintering in the open field, drawing lots for flowering in spring of the third year, and harvesting seeds in multiple seasons. The seedlings at planting time can be marketed as shallot from early May to late June; they can also be planted as autumn shallot by flat bed cluster planting (pinch shallot) or narrow row spacing before and after summer, or supplied as early spring shallot after winter.

2. Spring planting time: sowing after soil thawing in early spring, supplying as shallot before summer, or harvesting as dried shallot or ditch shallot after planting. It can also be used as a winter onion or as a seed plant for seed retention.

3, summer planting time: mostly in late July to early August sowing, it is also known as onion. The plants are bigger in winter. It is easy to complete the vernalization process, germinate early and flower quickly in the next spring. Generally, it will be listed after receiving croissants.

How to grow onions

1. Before planting, separate large and small seedlings, eliminate diseased seedlings, weak seedlings, over-seedlings and obviously curved seedlings, plant spacing 35-40 plants per meter, row spacing 1 meter, planting about 23,000 plants per mu. When planting, avoid onion seedling breakage, planting depth should not bury onion heart, too deep is not suitable for seedling, too shallow affects onion white length. When planting, leaf surface and planting ditch should be arranged vertically, which is beneficial to dense planting and management.

2. Planting tools can be used with garden iron skewers or garden wooden poles with a diameter of about 1.5 cm. When planting, make shallow holes first, perpendicular to the ground, insert the seedlings, and then lift them slightly upward to make the roots spread downward and keep the onion seedlings straight. If it bends, the stem will bend until later harvest, which is a defective product.

3, planting should be planted on the same side of the onion ditch, which is conducive to drainage after rain.

4. After planting, loosen and compact the soil on both sides of the onion plant, and then pour water through it.
