Garlic likes cold climate environment. Garlic sowed in autumn in open field is usually sown from late September to early October, which is suitable for its emergence. Generally, it takes about 40 to 45 days for sowing to 4 leaves. If sowing too early, the seedlings will be easily frozen. Sowing late due to the late high temperature, the production period is shortened, the yield is low, and the quality is poor. Let's take a look at the cultivation techniques of garlic in autumn with the editor.

1. Soil preparation and fertilization

Garlic root is string whisker root, no main root, its follow group is mainly distributed in 10-25 cm soil layer, belongs to shallow root system, root hair is less, absorption is weak, suitable for growing in loose and fertile, breathable, water and fertility strong neutral or slightly acidic soil, avoid continuous cropping with onion and garlic vegetables. Before planting, we should first apply sufficient base fertilizer, which is suitable for fully mature organic fertilizer, generally 4000-5000 kg per mu, and 20-30 cm deep ploughing soil after spreading. Then rake flat to make the bed.

2. Sowing seeds at the right time

Seed selection should be carried out before sowing, and large cloves with large garlic, hard cloves, fresh color and no disease or injury should be selected as seeds. In order to prevent diseases and insect pests, the seeds should be treated with chemical dressing or soaking before sowing. Sowing can be divided into furrow sowing or hole sowing, the sowing depth is maintained at about 5-6 cm, and the covered soil is 2-3 cm at the top of the valve after sowing. Planting density varies with varieties, generally planting 3-35000 plants per mu, plant spacing is controlled at about 8-9 cm, and row spacing is about 20 cm. Although proper density can increase yield, planting too dense will not only use a large amount of seeds, but also lead to small garlic and low commodity grade, so it is within the range of appropriate close planting. Small varieties of garlic can be closely planted, while large varieties can be sparsely planted properly.

3. Management before overwintering

In the case of suitable climate, garlic can emerge after sowing for about a week, and watering should be controlled at the seedling stage, especially for those covered with plastic film, and the whole seedling can be guaranteed by one watering. The seedlings should be checked frequently during the seedling emergence period, and the membrane should be broken in time after emergence, so as not to burn the seedlings under the film at high temperature. if the basal fertilizer is insufficient, one month after emergence, it is necessary to promote the growth of the seedlings, but there is no need for topdressing when the base fertilizer is sufficient. Before freezing, the soil should be watered with frozen water to make it safe to survive the winter.
