The total output of summer grain this year is 3.3% higher than that of the previous year.
China's total summer grain output in 2015 was 141.066 million tons (282.13 billion jin), an increase of 4.47 million tons (8.94 billion jin) over 2014 and 3.3 percent over the previous year, according to data released by the National Bureau of Statistics on the 15th.
Hou Rui, a senior statistician in the Rural Department of the National Bureau of Statistics, said that the increase in summer grain production in 2015 benefited from an increase in area and per unit yield. The sown area of summer grain in 2015 was 27692.3 thousand hectares, an increase of 0.4 percent over 2014. Due to the increase in sown area, the increase in sown area increased by 548000 tons, contributing 12.3 percent to the increase.
Hou Rui said that the increase in the sown area of summer grain is mainly affected by three factors: first, the state continues to implement the minimum purchase price policy in the main wheat producing areas, which has played an important role in stabilizing the sown area of wheat. Second, the central government will continue to increase support for strengthening agriculture and benefiting farmers, and promptly allocate various subsidy funds such as grain direct subsidies and improved seed subsidies in 2015. Third, the structure of sown area is adjusted greatly. Mainly in the main summer grain producing areas, the planting area of cotton and summer harvest rapeseed was reduced, and the planting of summer grain such as wheat was increased.
In 2015, the national summer grain yield reached 5094.0 kg per hectare; due to the increase in per unit yield, the increase increased by 3.922 million tons, accounting for 87.7% of the increase. The main reasons for the increase in summer grain yield are strong policy, good climate and mild disaster.
Summer grain includes grains, legumes and potatoes harvested in the summer. Summer harvest cereals mainly include wheat, corn and barley; summer harvest beans mainly include broad beans, peas and beans; potatoes include potatoes and sweet potatoes.
