The existence of millet has a very long history, it and rice, millet, wheat, millet in ancient times is called five grains, and millet is also known as yellow rice, it can be used to make wine and cakes, its drought resistance is extremely strong, more tenacious than wheat and sorghum, but now we mainly plant rice and wheat, the yield of millet in our country is also very small, it can be said that it is a relatively rare variety. So today, the pro-agricultural network will tell you how to grow millet.

1. Select improved varieties

After such a long period of development, there are many varieties of millet, but there are fewer growers, so the price is more expensive now, so we must plant millet in order to make money, so we must have the characteristics of high yield and high quality. and most of the millet varieties in our country come from the north, so the ability to resist drought and disease is very good. We can choose Jiu millet No. 1, Longmi No. 23, Gongmi No. 1 and so on, these varieties are very good both in yield and quality.

2. Land selection and preparation

Because of the strong resistance of millet, the requirement of soil is not so important, but if you want to have a high yield, it is best to choose sandy land with rich soil and prepare the land at least half a month in advance before planting, so that you can dry the soil for a period of time. When preparing the soil, the land is required to be flat and the soil is fine, which can enhance the permeability of the soil, which is conducive to water storage and plant growth.

3. Sowing seeds at the right time

Millet is a relatively strange plant, it can be sown all the year round, because it is not only strong in drought resistance, but also not weak in cold resistance, of course, if you want the yield and quality to reach a high level, then the best time to sow is in May every spring and from the end of August to the beginning of September every autumn, and the temperature during this period is basically about 15 to 25 degrees. During this period, Rain Water and light are relatively sufficient, the most suitable for the growth of millet.

4. Sowing and raising seedlings

There are three ways to sow millet, if you are lazy, just so that the land will not be abandoned, then you can sow the seeds evenly in the whole field and press the seeds into the soil with a rake. finally, you can cover it with a film or withered grass or plant ash. We most often use strip sowing, which can not only ensure the reasonable density and yield of millet in the field, but also facilitate a field management in the later stage. The third kind is hole sowing. We need to sow seeds at a distance of 35 to 40 centimeters per row and 25 to 30 centimeters per plant. This way belongs to intensive cultivation.

5. Field management

When the millet seedlings grow to three or four centimeters, we can interplant and replenish the seedlings in the field, usually we need to plant in a week, because if a little later, the yield will be reduced. After the completion of planting, we need to carry out the first fertilization, watering and weeding, mainly in order to promote the growth of millet seedlings, and when the millet seedlings grow to a certain period, they will enter the bolting stage, which has a great impact on the yield of millet. So we have to carry out the second fertilization, mainly phosphate and potash fertilizer, and the third fertilization will wait until the panicle of millet, when there is a lack of nutrients. Then there will be a lot of flat or empty grains, we are mainly boron fertilizer, foliar spraying. Weeding needs to be carried out during the first and second fertilization, and watering is needed at the same time of each fertilization, which is beneficial to the absorption of nutrients by millet seedlings.
