Sorghum is an important economic food crop in China, which is planted in all regions, and it is extremely adaptable to soil, but it is easy to get high yield in the soil with higher fertility, while the yield will decrease in the more barren area. So fertilization is the key point to achieve high yield in planting sorghum, so how to apply fertilizer to sorghum? Let's take a look.

1. Fertilizing according to the characteristics of varieties

The fertilizer demand characteristics of varieties should be carefully observed when planting. For varieties that like fertilizer, fully mature organic fertilizer should be used as base fertilizer, and more organic or inorganic fertilizer should be applied when fertilizing, which is generally required to apply 2000 to 3000 kg of organic fertilizer per mu. And topdressing 2-3 times in the whole growth process to ensure that it has enough fertility to grow, and apply urea, phosphorus and potassium fertilizer and other high-efficiency chemical fertilizer. For the varieties with low fertilizer demand and short growth period, organic fertilizer can be used as base fertilizer, and the amount and times of topdressing should be less, generally once. If there is enough base fertilizer, there is no need for topdressing.

2. Fertilize according to soil condition.

Choosing loose and fertile soil is the best choice for planting sorghum, but this is not the case in every region, so attention should be paid to the fertility and properties of the soil when fertilizing. If it is a soil with low fertility, it is mainly organic fertilizer, with phosphate fertilizer; for the soil with poor water and fertility, topdressing should be adopted, supplemented by base fertilizer, and less fertilizer should be applied many times, otherwise it should be applied too much at one time, but the soil fertilizer conservation is poor, which will lead to a waste of fertility. However, if the soil pH value is large, acidic or alkaline soil, these two kinds of soil will have a certain impact on the quality and yield of sorghum. Lime nitrogen and calcium magnesium phosphorus can be applied in acidic soil, while ammonium sulfate or calcium superphosphate can be applied in alkaline soil to adjust their pH to neutral, which is suitable for sorghum growth.

3. Fertilize according to the climate

Climate change will also affect the growth of sorghum, and fertilization is no exception. Fertilization should be carried out according to the climate change. For example, when the temperature is low in early spring, it is appropriate to use phosphorus and potassium fertilizer as seed fertilizer to promote seed germination. In the early and middle stages of seedling growth, the climate gradually picked up and warmed up, at this time, nitrogen fertilizer should be applied to promote the rapid growth of seedlings, and in the later stage of growth, the temperature began to drop again, and foliar spraying of phosphorus and potassium fertilizer was needed to promote maturity and improve yield and quality.

4. Fertilizing according to the nature of fertilizer

When fertilizing, it is necessary to understand the function and nature of each kind of fertilizer in order to grow sorghum rapidly. Nitrogen fertilizer such as human and animal manure and urea can be used as topdressing fertilizer, while organic fertilizer has slow effect and low mobility of phosphorus and potassium fertilizer, so it is suitable to be used as base fertilizer or seed fertilizer.
