China is a large cotton producing country, which is planted all over the country, but there is a headache for growers when planting, that is, the excessive growth of cotton is an important reason that affects cotton production. During the crazy growth, there were too many leaf branches, excessive vegetative growth, high shedding rate of flower buds and bolls, and few peaches, resulting in a sharp decline in yield. What is the reason for the crazy growth? What should we do about it? Let's get to know it.

First, the reason for crazy growth

1. Partial application of nitrogen fertilizer

Cotton is a crop that needs a large amount of fertilizer. Generally, each growth of 100kg cotton needs to absorb nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium element 35-40kg, but its demand for nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium fertilizer in each growth stage is different. In the early growth stage, there is a greater demand for nitrogen and less phosphorus and potassium, while in the later stage, it is on the contrary, less for nitrogen and more phosphorus and potassium, so we should pay attention to this when fertilizing. However, many growers do not have a good grasp of this characteristic, fertilizing when applying a large amount of nitrogen fertilizer (urea or ammonium bicarbonate), resulting in crazy plant growth.

2. Improper watering

Water is an important component of cotton, which needs to be absorbed from the soil during growth. Like fertility, water requirements are different in different growth stages. In the process of growing, the average content of soil is 60%, 70%, and 1/3 of the water is consumed by transpiration during the whole growing period, but if it is watered too much, it will cause it to grow excessively, resulting in greedy green and late ripening.

3. Planting density is too high.

If the planting density is too high, it will lead to concealment in the field and lack of light, resulting in the weakening of cotton photosynthesis and less synthetic nutrients, resulting in excessive growth.

II. Prevention and control methods

1. Strengthen the management of fertilizer and water

When fertilizing, we must pay attention to the reasonable collocation of various fertilizers, not excessive application of a single fertilizer, when there has been a phenomenon of crazy growth, we should stop the application of nitrogen fertilizer, increase the application of phosphorus and potassium fertilizer, combined with pruning, to control the trend of excessive growth. The moisture must be well controlled, not too much, not too little, watering during drought, drainage and waterlogging prevention measures should be taken when it is overcast and rainy, it is appropriate to keep the soil water content at 60%, and watering should be stopped at the end of August so as not to affect the yield.

2. Cutting branches and removing leaves

In the seedling stage, the leaves and branches of the lower part of the main stem can be cut off, so that the plant can reduce the nutrient supply of the root system, and the plant will return to normal growth.

3. Intermediate ploughing

Can be combined with mid-ploughing weeding, deep ploughing of the plant, damage part of the root system, so that the rate of root absorption of nutrients decreased, if serious, the surrounding root system can be divided.

The above are the reasons for the excessive growth of cotton and the prevention and control methods. Hope to help you, want to know more about cotton planting, please follow us.
