Last Updated: 2024/11/05, Citrus fruit trees mainly originated in the rainy forest zone of southern China. They are evergreen fruit trees in the subtropics. They like warm and humid climate, are not resistant to low temperature, are more resistant to sprouting, have good air and good water in their roots, and require fertile soil rich in organic matter. Let's take a look at them in detail.

Citrus fruit trees mainly originated in the rainy forest zone of southern China. They are evergreen fruit trees in the subtropics. They like warm and humid climate, are not resistant to low temperature, are more resistant to sprouting, have good air and water in their roots, and require fertile soil rich in organic matter. Let's take a detailed look at the planting conditions of citrus.

Temperature effect

Temperature is not only the main factor affecting the distribution, yield and quality of citrus cultivation, but also the main basis of citrus ecological regionalization. It is generally believed that 12.8 ℃ is the starting temperature for citrus growth, and the optimum temperature for citrus growth is 23-31 ℃, and the growth is inhibited when it reaches 37-38 ℃. The effective accumulated temperature has a great influence on the growth of citrus. In the citrus producing areas of China, the annual accumulated temperature of ≥ 10 ℃ is 4500000 ℃.

Light condition

Citrus has a wide range of adaptation to sunshine. The annual sunshine hours in citrus producing areas in China is about 1000-2700 hours, which generally shows good growth, citrus is more shade-tolerant, scattered light is beneficial to enhance photosynthesis, and direct light is too strong. it is often not conducive to citrus growth and is easy to cause fruit and branch burns. Therefore, proper close planting is beneficial to the growth and fruit of citrus. However, in order to achieve high yield and high quality, citrus also needs better light, sufficient sunshine, strong growth of branches and leaves, small and thick leaves, high nitrogen and phosphorus content, good flower bud differentiation, high yield, good coloring, strong aroma, and increased sugar and vitamin C content.

Moisture requirement

Citrus likes to be moist, the annual water demand is large, and the annual rainfall is 1200mm to 2000mm. In the citrus growing season, the rainfall is large and uniform, which can reduce the cost of irrigation. If there is little rainfall or dry season, irrigation should be carried out.

Topographic soil

Citrus can be cultivated successfully in mountains, hills, plains and river alluvium. It also has a wide adaptability to soil, such as purple soil, red-yellow soil, alluvial fluvo-aquic soil and so on. However, the citrus root system is good for air and water, which requires fertile soil with deep soil layer, rich organic matter, loose soil and good structure. Soil organic matter content is generally required to be more than 3%, preferably about 5%. Citrus has a wide range of adaptation to soil acidity and alkalinity, and high yield can be obtained within the range of pH4.8~8.5, and pH6.0~6.5 is the suitable one. In the purple soil of our province, the alkaline purple soil is above pH8.0, and the citrus shows weak tree potential and yellowing leaves, so attention should be paid to soil improvement.
