Last Updated: 2024/11/06, We all know that both plants can be used as medicinal materials, but we may be more familiar with the second plant. Whether as plants or as medicinal materials, they are somewhat similar. But there must be a difference between them. So, what is the difference between the two?

1. Species and genera

This can be said to be the most fundamental difference between the two, and species are the fundamental criteria by which we distinguish different plants. For the first plant, it belongs to Scrophulariaceae and Coptis, while for the second plant, it belongs to Ranunculaceae and Coptis. The nicknames of the first kind of plant are "Hu Lian" and "cut Gu Lu Ze", while the other names of the second kind of plant are "Wei Lian", "Chuanlian" and so on. The differences of species and genera determine that they are different in many ways.

2. Distribution area

First of all, let's talk about the difference in their distribution above sea level. The former is mainly distributed at an altitude of 3600 to 4400 meters above sea level, which is longer than that in rocks or stone piles in alpine areas, while the latter is much lower in elevation, mainly in the range of 1500 to 2300 meters, mostly in dense forests. Then there is the difference in their distribution, the first kind of plants are particularly distributed in India and Indonesia, while the second kind of plants are widely distributed in China, mainly in Sichuan, Guizhou, Hubei, Hunan and other provinces.

3. Medicinal value

What we are talking about here is not that some of their values are large or small, but that there are differences in their main efficacy. For example, the first kind of plant is mainly used to relieve deficiency fever, while the second kind of plant is used to purge stomach fire and clear heart fire, and can be used to detoxify.

4. Appearance

The difference between them is mainly the difference of leaves. The leaves of the former are spoon-shaped, while those of the latter are ovate-triangular.

5. Flowering and fruiting stage

The first type of flowering is in June and the fruiting period is in July; the second category blossoms from February to March and bears fruit from April to June.
