Walnut is one of our favorite nuts, many farmers will graft it when planting, which can improve the quality and yield of walnut, so when and how to operate walnut grafting. Let's take a look at the grafting method of walnut seedlings with the pro-farm network.

1. Collect scion

The scion was collected before the defoliation of walnut, and the plants with strong growth, good development and no disease were selected, and the rough 1.5cm branches of the same year were intercepted, and the measures of water loss were made. In the cold season, the scion must be wrapped in paraffin wax, placed in a humid environment, and taken out 2-3 days before grafting to awaken dormancy and promote its peeling.

2. Rootstock treatment

The same rootstock should also be strong, and the joint position of the rootstock should be at the thickness of 3-10cm. Make a wound at the base of the tree before grafting and release water, which can reduce the effect of tree bleeding on the survival rate of grafting. One or two roots of the tree can also be truncated after grafting.

3. Grafting

Cut the prepared scion, leave only two or three buds, cut the base into a wedge, then split the rootstock, flatten it where the scion is to be, and then split a medium-sized opening in the middle. In the cut scion into the split, they will be closely bonded, be careful not to insert all the wound, leave a part of it, which is conducive to wound healing. Then use plastic film to tie up the interface, to completely wrap the wound, leaving only buds on the outside.

4. Management after grafting

Walnut trees are different from other trees. many tree species should be watered immediately after grafting, but it is different. do not water within half a month after grafting, otherwise the wound will increase the flow of water, resulting in a large amount of water in the interface and reducing the survival rate. Check frequently and find that too much water in the interface should be released in time, but when the scion begins to sprout, open the wrapped film slowly to enhance ventilation, not all at once. After the grafting survived, the film should be loosened in time, and the grafted seedlings should be carefully maintained. A small stick can be used as a support to prevent the wind from breaking and growing on the ground.
