On July 30, the Ministry of Agriculture issued an emergency notice on how to do a good job in the monitoring and control of corn armyworm, requiring agricultural departments at all levels in relevant areas and their plant protection agencies to gain bumper harvests based on disaster resistance, earnestly strengthen organization and leadership, implement prevention and control responsibilities at various levels, strengthen propaganda and launch, pay close attention to the implementation of measures, firmly prevent and control the initiative, and strictly prevent sudden outbreaks.

Armyworm is a major trans-regional migratory pest, which has the characteristics of concentrated outbreak and concealed harm. once the damage breaks out in the middle and later stage of maize growth, it will bring serious yield loss. According to the monitoring of the national network for major crop diseases and insect pests, adult peaks appeared one after another in the main corn producing areas of Northeast China, North China and Huang-Huai in mid-late July, and the number of moths was significantly higher than that of the previous year and perennial years, and the weather with more precipitation in the near future was beneficial to its reproduction and harm. It is expected that the larval damage will enter the peak period in the first and middle of August, and there will be high density and concentrated damage in some parts.

The circular stresses that agricultural departments at all levels and their plant protection institutions should strengthen monitoring and investigation, systematically carry out adult inducement testing, ovarian development progress, and field insect egg quantity investigation, comprehensively grasp the occurrence dynamics, define the occurrence and distribution areas, key control fields, and the best prevention and control period, and timely issue forecast and early warning information to guide farmers in timely and scientific prevention and control. Ensure that the best period of prevention and control is not missed because of inadequate monitoring and early warning.

The notice points out that the prevention and control of corn armyworm requires strong timeliness and a high degree of organization. on the basis of vigorously promoting lighting and sex attractants to trap and kill adults and reducing the number of eggs in the field, all localities should prepare emergency prevention and control materials, funds and teams in advance. According to the dynamics of the pest situation, timely start emergency plans, vigorously promote professional unified control rule, especially promote centralized and unified control of large-scale plant protection machinery. Contain the outbreak and harm in time.
