On August 4, the Ministry of Commerce held a regular press conference, and press spokesman Shen Danyang responded to 11 hot and sensitive issues of high concern to the media at home and abroad. Among them, Shen Danyang gave an answer on the rapid rise in domestic pork prices since March this year and how the Ministry of Commerce ensures the stability of market supply and demand.

According to Shen Danyang, domestic pig prices have experienced a continuous decline for nearly two and a half years since 2013. after late March 2015, due to the decline in pig stocks and other factors, pig and pork prices began to stop falling and rebounded. the price of pig food reached the break-even point of 6:1 in early June 2015. In the past two months, the price of live pigs has accelerated, and the price ratio of pig grain has reached 7.07. The market has attracted high attention. The Ministry of Commerce has also stepped up market monitoring and closely followed and analyzed.

According to our monitoring, the average price of live pigs in the first half of the year was 13.36 yuan per kilogram, an increase of 3.3% over the same period last year. By the end of June, the average pig price of 300 large farming enterprises across the country was 15.29 yuan per kilogram, up 24.9 percent from the lowest point in March. Since the price of pig grain fell as low as 4.6 per cent in 2014, farmers suffered heavy losses, so on the whole, this round of increase in pig prices is a repair to the sharp decline in the past two years and a self-repair behavior of the market.

From the statistics of the Ministry of Agriculture, the pig stock is still at a relatively high level, and there will be no obvious shortage in the market supply. In spite of this, in order to effectively protect the supply of pork market, the Ministry of Commerce has recently conducted a study with relevant departments on how to do a good job in ensuring supply in the pork market and reserved the necessary measures. In the next step, the Ministry of Commerce will continue to strengthen the monitoring of the pig market, especially to do a good job in the supply of pork market during important holidays.
