Walnut propagation uses sowing method, which can be divided into spring sowing and autumn sowing, but when sowing, because the walnut seed shell is hard, so its natural germination is slow, so it is necessary to accelerate germination before sowing to improve the germination rate and emergence speed. So how to sprout? Let's take a look at the common methods of sprouting walnuts with the editor.

1. Stratified sand storage method

The dormancy period of walnut seeds is poor, and the seeds can be collected for stratified sand storage. the specific method is to choose a place with good drainage, leeward shade and no rat damage to dig trenches for storage. Generally, the ditch is 1m high and 1.5m wide, and its length depends on the storage capacity. Lay a layer of wet sand at the bottom of the ditch, with a thickness of about 10-15cm, a layer of walnut and a layer of wet sand. When you reach the mouth of the pit, cover with sand and form a ridge shape. Seeds can be stored in wet sand with or without skin, but without skin, soak in cold water for 2-3 days and store.

2. Seed soaking in cold water

Put the walnut seeds into a container or jar, pour into cold water, the amount of water can exceed the seeds, soak in order to prevent the seeds from floating, you can use stones or heavy objects to suppress the wood at the mouth of the container. Generally soak for 7-10 days, the water should be changed once a day when soaking, and the seeds can be sown when the water is absorbed and the cracks are expanded.

3. Seed soaking in warm water

Also prepare a container, put the seeds into it, pour in about 80 degrees warm water, and then stir with a stick tool to make the temperature drop to normal and stop stirring. After soaking for 8-10 days, the water should be changed once a day, and the seeds can be sown when some of the seeds begin to crack.

4. Seed soaking in boiling water

The method of soaking seeds in boiling water is suitable for emergency sowing. When the seeds have not been treated, put the dried walnut seeds into a container, pour in about 2 times the amount of boiling water, stir in time to the hot water, and the water surface is higher than the seeds. After stirring for a period of time, when the water temperature is no longer hot, add cold water, soak for a few hours and then remove and sow. This method can not only quickly break the dormancy of walnut seeds, but also kill the pathogens on the surface by high temperature, but it is only suitable for walnut varieties with medium and thick shell, but not suitable for walnut seeds with thin shell or paper.
