Since melons are called melons, they must taste sweet, but many farmers are reacting that the melons planted are low in sweetness and even bitter in taste. The sweetness of melons is closely related to the sugar content. Sugar content determines the sweetness of melons, while some melons are not sweet because they contain less sugar for some reasons. So how can we improve the sweetness of melons? Let's have a look with the editor.

1. Rational fertilization

Reasonable fertilization can improve the quality of muskmelon and increase the sugar content. Basic fertilizer should be applied before planting. 2000-3000 kg of rotten farm manure and 150,200kg potassium sulfate compound fertilizer can be applied per mu. When the melon grows to the size of an egg, it is necessary to apply fertilizer in time, and then it can be combined with watering and applying expanded melon fertilizer. Muskmelon is a potassium-loving plant, and there is a great demand for potassium in the later stage. The application of potassium fertilizer can improve the variety and yield of muskmelon. In addition, when the plant appears element deficiency, its growth node is blocked, and its yield and quality will decline, so it needs to be solved by spraying micro-fertilizer. The foliar spray of low concentration of calcium chloride and boric acid can be sprayed once a week for 2-3 times to supplement the nutrients needed by the plant, while spraying potassium dihydrogen phosphate foliar fertilizer in the later stage can obviously increase the yield and improve the quality.

2. Increase the temperature difference between day and night

The fruit needs sufficient light and a large temperature difference between day and night when it ripens, which is beneficial to the accumulation of sugar in the fruit. In the fruit period, ventilation is reduced during the day to increase the room temperature, and the sugar synthesis of the fruit at 35 degrees is twice as high as that at 10 degrees, while at night, ventilation is strengthened and room temperature is reduced, so as to artificially create an environment of temperature difference between day and night. If the temperature is too high at night, the leaves breathe more and consume more carbohydrates, which will reduce the sugar content and make the melon not sweet.

3. Control moisture

During the normal growth of muskmelon, water and nitrogen elements should be properly controlled after the fruit enters the ripening stage, because excessive nitrogen is absorbed during fruit ripening, unstable intermediates such as nitrate will accumulate, resulting in excessive plant growth and easy to cause disease. The same is true of water, when sugar accumulates, too much water is irrigated, and the fruit expands rapidly, diluting the sugar, causing melons to be unsweet.

4. Ripe harvest

The quality of muskmelon is closely related to the ripening of the fruit. When the fruit is not fully ripe, the sugar in the fruit has not been completely transformed, so the sweetness is too low and the aroma is insufficient. If the fruit is harvested too late, the storage substances in the fruit will be exhausted, the fruit will be too ripe, and the cell tissue will become soft, resulting in lack of taste.
