Last Updated: 2024/11/06, Spodoptera litura belongs to the family Lepidoptera. Also known as tea lamp moth, red edge lamp moth. Damage to broccoli, mustard, cabbage, cabbage, cherry radish, Dutch beans, lentils, sweet corn and other vegetables. The damage of Spodoptera litura is characterized by larvae eating young leaves, flowers and fruits of vegetables.

Red edge moth belongs to lepidoptera moth family. Also known as red sleeve moth, red edge moth. Damage broccoli, mustard, cabbage, cherry radish, peas, lentils, sweet corn and other vegetables.

The damage characteristics of the red edge lamp moth are that the larvae nibble on the tender leaves, flowers and fruits of vegetables, affecting the yield and quality.

Morphological characteristics Adult body length 18~20mm, wing span 46~64 mm. Body and wings white, front wing edge and neck plate end edge red, abdomen back except base segment and anal hair tufts orange yellow, and separated by black belt. The mature larvae are about 40mm in length. The head is yellow-brown, the body is dark ochre or black, and the whole body is densely covered with reddish brown or black long hair. Chest feet black, abdomen feet red. Young larvae are grayish yellow. The egg is hemispherical in shape, 0.79mm in diameter. There are radial longitudinal stripes on the surface of egg shell from top to periphery. It is yellowish white and shiny at the beginning of production, and gradually changes to grayish yellow to dark gray. The egg pore is reddish and then turns black. Pupa elliptic, 22~26mm long, chest width 9~10mm, dark brown, shiny, abdomen 10, outside there are yellow brown silk cocoon. Female pupae have genital pores in the center of the 8th abdominal segment, male pupae have 10 anal spines at the end.

Life habits occur 1~3 generations a year, overwintering as pupae, and eclosion begins in May ~ June of the next year. The eggs are laid in clumps on the back of the leaves, up to hundreds of eggs. The larvae feed in groups when they hatch, and disperse after the third instar. Young larvae are agile. The egg stage is 6~8 days, the larval stage is 27~28 days, and the adult life span is 5~7 days.

Control methods:

1. Using black light lamp to trap adults, reduce the source of insects in the field.

2. Early inspection of Cruciferae, leguminous vegetables and other pests around the host field wasteland, found a large number of larvae to move to the vegetable field, can dig trenches to stop killing.

3. Control larvae by timely application before the third instar. 500 - 800 times solution of 25% chlorfenuron No. 3 suspension, or 1000 - 1500 times solution of 5% Nongmengte emulsifiable concentrate, or 3000 - 4000 times solution of 5% chlorfenapyr emulsifiable concentrate, or 3000 - 4000 times solution of 20% diflubenzuron suspension, or 1500 - 2000 times solution of 10% duolaibao suspension, or 2000 - 3000 times solution of 2.5% beta-cypermethrin emulsifiable concentrate can be selected, or 5% Cartosil EC 1500~2000 times solution, or 5.7% Baishude EC 3000~4000 times solution spray.
