Where is the specialty of chili? What kinds do you have? When are they all on the market?
I don't know since when, Chinese people like spicy food more and more. In China, the planting area of pepper has surpassed that of radish and tomato, second only to Chinese cabbage, and has become "the second largest vegetable in China". So where are chili peppers a specialty? What kinds do you have? When will they all be on the market?
In China, chili peppers are mainly produced in Sichuan, Guizhou, Hunan, Yunnan, Shaanxi, Henan (Xichuan County), Jize County, Hebei Province and Tuoketuo County, Inner Mongolia.
Main species
Vegetable pepper (variety) lantern pepper
The plants are stout and tall. Leaf moments orbicular or ovate, 10-13 cm long. Fruiting pedicel erect or drooping, fruit large, near globular
Shaped, cylindrical or flat spherical, multi-longitudinal groove, top truncated or slightly sunken, base truncated and often slightly inward concave, taste not spicy and slightly sweet or slightly pepper flavor.
It is cultivated in both north and south of China, and the vegetable pepper usually sold on the market is a variety.
Chaotian pepper (variety)
There are many dichotomous branches in plants. Leaves 4-7 cm long, ovate. Flowers are often solitary between bifurcations, pedicels erect, flowers slightly drooping, Corolla white or purplish. The pedicel and fruit are erect, the fruit is small, conical, about 1.5 (- 3) cm long, red or purple after maturity, the taste is extremely spicy.
It is cultivated in both north and south of China, and is often cultivated as bonsai among the masses.
Cluster raw pepper
Plants can be up to 1 meter high. Leaves ovate-lanceolate, petiole slender. Flowers are often solitary in the lower part of the branch, and several flowers (up to 8-10 flowers clustered with several leaves) are at the top of the branch due to extreme shortening of internodes. The pedicel is thin, erect or obliquely ascending, and the flower is slightly drooping. Fruiting pedicel stout, erect, berry finger-shaped or conical, 4-10 cm long, slightly arched, erect on pedicel, red when ripe, very spicy.
It is cultivated in both north and south of China, usually for bonsai or a small amount for vegetables or seasonings.
Market time of chili peppers:
The harvest of chili peppers in the south usually begins from June to July and ends in November.
Northern chili peppers mature in September and October of the lunar calendar. The open-air cultivation in the north will begin to mature at the end of August and end in the middle of October. But if it is planted in a shed, it can be planted all the year round.
Because it takes 25-40 days for pepper fruit to mature from flowering to commercial fruit (green ripening period), and different varieties need different days, it takes 25-30 days for early-maturing varieties and 35-40 days for late-maturing varieties. It takes 45 to 60 days from flowering to physiological maturity, but 60 to 100 days from flowering to physiological maturity in winter protected areas with very low temperature, and about 110 days for some late-maturing varieties.
Due to different regions, the harvest time of chili peppers must be different. Only when we have a general understanding can we choose the right time to harvest chili according to the local conditions such as temperature. When the pepper is ripe, the pepper ripening time will be introduced to you. I hope it will be helpful to you.
