If sowing too early, the seedlings grow too vigorously before overwintering and consume nutrients, it will reduce the ability of overwintering, may also lead to vernalization, cause secondary growth, and form compound garlic in the second year, reducing the quality of garlic. If sowing too late, the seedlings are small, the tissue is tender, the root system is weak, the accumulation of nutrients is less, the cold resistance is lower, and there are more deaths during overwintering. Therefore, the sowing date of garlic must be strictly controlled.

Garlic likes cold climatic conditions. The suitable temperature for aboveground stem and leaf growth is 12-16 ℃, and the best seedling age for overwintering is 4-6 leaf stage. It takes about 40-45 days from sowing to 4-6 leaves, and stops growing when the daily average temperature is below 7 ℃. The seedlings have strong cold tolerance and can withstand the low temperature of 10 ℃. Under the condition of 0-4 ℃, it can pass through the vernalization stage after 30-40 days. The suitable sowing time for autumn sowing garlic in open field is from late September to early October (about Cold Dew after the Autumn Equinox). Sowing early, easy to be frozen, sowing late due to the late high temperature, the production period is shortened, the yield is low, the quality is poor.
