Pomegranate trees are deciduous shrubs or small trees and evergreen trees in the tropics. It is cultivated in both north and south of China, and pomegranate grafting can transform inferior tree species into excellent tree species with more fruit, good quality and strong stress resistance. So, when is it appropriate for pomegranate trees to be grafted? What are the methods of grafting?

When is it appropriate for pomegranate trees to be grafted?

The grafting of pomegranate trees is mostly carried out in the growing period. The main phenological period of grafting method is the early stage of germination, which is generally the most suitable from late March to mid-April.

What are the methods of grafting?

Pomegranate trees are most commonly used in grafting, such as subcutaneous grafting, cutting grafting, split grafting and so on.

Subcutaneous branch grafting is carried out when the rootstock sprouts and the bark is easy to peel off. The method is as follows: first, in the grafting position of the rootstock, the smooth and scar-free place is cut vertically, and the cross-section is cut off with a knife, then a 3-cm-4 cm long Malta-shaped cutting surface is cut from the side of the lower end of the scion, and the scion is turned over to cut a large triangle and small cutting surface on the back side of the cutting face. and gently scrape the rough skin on both sides of the cutting surface with a knife blade to show green. Leave 2-4 buds (nodes) to cut after scion cutting. Then select the straight part of the cambium on the rootstock to cut vertically with the cross section, up to the xylem, with a length of 2 cm to 3 cm. After the vertical edge is cut, the blade is used to pry lightly, so that the skin is slightly separated from the wood, and then the scion is aligned with the incision, and the big cut is slowly inserted facing the xylem until the big cutting surface is about 0.5 cm open on the saw. Each section of the rootstock can insert 2 to 4 scions. After the scion is inserted, the scion is tied up from the lower end of the seam with plastic tape until the scion rootstock is tightly fastened.

Post-grafting management of pomegranate trees

1. Get rid of sprouting.

two。 Check to survive and make up. Check survival 15 days after grafting, when it is found that all the scions on the interface are wrinkled, blackened and dry, it means that the scion is dead and needs to be repaired.

3. Set up support. The new branches that grow after survival are easily broken by the wind because they have not yet healed firmly. Therefore, when the new tip is 15 to 20 centimeters long, tie some sticks to the tree for support (commonly known as back binding).

4. Summer pruning. When the new shoot is 0cm and 60cm, the new shoot used as the backbone branch (main side branch) should be gently pulled according to the plastic requirements, tied to the stick and adjusted to the proper angle. Other branches adopt the methods of twisting, leveling, smoothing and pressing to change the growth of branches from upright to oblique, horizontal or drooping, so that they can not affect the growth of backbone branches, but also form mixed buds to blossom and bear fruit.

5. Control diseases and insect pests. In the early stage of the occurrence of pests, 20% permethrin can be sprayed 3000 times. Disease-prone areas can be prevented with 200 times of Bordeaux solution or 800 times of 50% methyl topiramate wettable powder.
