Chinese cabbage, also known as "heading Chinese cabbage", "cabbage", "yellow bud white", "rubber cabbage" and so on, has a large planting area. So what is the distribution of its origin? When is the best time to plant it? When will it be harvested? It is understood that Chinese cabbage is widely cultivated in all parts of China, with North China and the south of the Yangtze River as the main producing areas, accounting for 40% and 60% of the sown area of autumn, winter and spring vegetables.

When is the best time to grow Chinese cabbage?

Early-maturing varieties are generally sown in the first and middle of August, and some are sown earlier in late July. Medium-maturing varieties can be sown from late August to early September. Late-maturing varieties should be sowed in late August.

Growth habits:

1. The growth and development process of Chinese cabbage can be divided into two stages: vegetative growth and reproductive growth. The vegetative growth stage can be divided into the following periods:

2. Germination stage: from seed germination to unearthed, true leaf exposure is the germination stage. It takes about 3-5 days under suitable temperature and soil moisture conditions.

3. In the seedling stage, the first leaf ring was formed from the exposure of true leaves to the expansion of 5-8 leaves. Precocious varieties have 5 leaves at seedling stage, which takes about 12-15 days. There are 8 leaves in the seedling stage of late-maturing varieties, which takes about 17-18 days.

4. Rosette stage: two more leaf rings form rosette after the end of seedling stage. The young heart leaves in the center of the plant begin to clasp, which is the characteristic of the end of the rosette. During this period, early-maturing varieties took about 20-21 days and late-maturing varieties about 27-28 days.

5. Heading stage: from heart leaf clasping to leaf ball formation. It takes about 25-30 days for early-maturing varieties and 50 days for late-maturing varieties.

6. Dormancy period: the leaf ball is forced to go into dormancy because of the cold climate.

When will the cabbage be harvested?

The time of planting and harvesting varies with different varieties and regions of Chinese cabbage.

The more growing days of middle and late maturing varieties, the more fully mature the leaf bulb is and the higher the yield is, so the harvest is often delayed as much as possible to enrich the leaf ball. Chinese cabbage is resistant to light frost, but frost injury occurs when it encounters low temperature frost below-2 ℃.

The harvest time of Chinese cabbage is usually around Lesser Snow. However, the specific year should start from the climate change of the current year, and according to the low temperature limit that Chinese cabbage can tolerate-2 ℃, pay close attention to listen to the weather forecast and prepare for rush harvest. In case of cold spell attack, emergency harvest should be done, local storage should be made, weeds should be covered, and vegetable leaves should be temporarily protected against freezing.
