What are the cultivation techniques of Begonia in Xifu?

Begonia is usually propagated by grafting or ramet, as well as by sowing, striping and root cutting. The seedlings obtained by grafting can blossom earlier and maintain the original excellent characteristics.

1. Sowing method

Although the seedling grows slowly, it often produces variation, so the sowing method is still used in order to obtain a large number of rootstocks or cross breeding. The commonly used rootstocks in northern China are Shan Dingzi, Xifu begonia, split leaf begonia and so on, while Hubei begonia is used in the south. Begonia seeds must be treated by low temperature stratification for 30 ~ 100 days before sowing. Fully stratified seeds emerge quickly and neatly, and the emergence rate is high; non-stratified seeds can not germinate, or rarely germinate. You can also pick fruit in autumn, remove the meat, and sow the seeds on the sand bed after a little drying, so that the seeds will ripen naturally. The depth of the covered soil is about 1 cm, covered with plastic film to preserve soil moisture, remove the plastic film after emergence, apply a layer of loose fertilizer soil in time, strengthen fertilizer and water management at seedling stage, and can be transplanted in late autumn of that year.

2. Grafting method

The seedlings sown and propagated were used as rootstocks for branch grafting or bud grafting. To make branch or bud grafting. The sap flowed and sprouted for branch grafting in spring and budded in autumn (from July to September). Branch grafting can be done by cutting, splitting and so on. The scion selects the fully developed 1-year-old branch, takes its middle section (with more than 2 full buds), then covers the scion with fine soil, and the bud is grafted with the word "T". About 10 days after that, where the bud is fresh, the person who falls in the corner of the petiole is the proof of living, and the binding can be removed after a few days. When the seedling height is 80 cm ~ 100 cm, develop backbone branches, and then only trim dense branches, introverted branches, overlapping branches and maintain a round crown.

3. Split-plant method

Before sprouting in early spring or after defoliation in autumn and winter, the tiller strips sprouting from the rhizosphere were cut into several individual plants, or 2-3 rooted sprouting strips were transplanted into a cluster. After planting, it should be watered thoroughly in time, pay attention to preserve soil moisture, shade if necessary, and water in case of drought.
