The relevant agencies lowered their forecast for China's corn production in 2015 to 229 million tons, down 3 million tons from earlier forecasts, due to the drought in parts of northeast China.

However, the reduced corn yield still reached an all-time high, an increase of 6.2% over the previous year. The high yield of corn means that the central government will face more pressure to reduce huge corn stocks and restrict imports.

Adequate domestic corn supply, coupled with large inventories and falling domestic prices, will restrict imports, according to relevant agencies. The Chinese government recently launched a new licensing policy aimed at controlling the surging import of corn substitutes. China's imports of corn and corn by-products, including corn distiller's grains, hit an all-time high in July as feed processors replaced high-priced domestic corn with cheap import supplies. The decline in imports will help increase domestic corn demand to 179.5 million tons in 2015. Imports of corn substitutes surged, causing domestic corn consumption to fall to 170 million tons for the first time in years in 2014.
