Peppermint is a perennial herb, belonging to a kind of vanilla plant, the plant grows very fast, generally showing creeping growth, the plant height is about 30cm, and the crown width can reach 100cm. When raising peppermint, you should raise it in a flowerpot to control its growth. Peppermint has many uses. It can be used as a cooking material or as a cool drink. Friends who like to open up a "small vegetable garden" on their balcony might as well plant a small piece of mint, and how many days will the mint seeds germinate? What is the planting time and method?

First, how many days will the mint seeds germinate?

Generally speaking, less than a week, more than ten days. When sowing, just sow the seeds on the surface of the wet basin soil, and then cover the basin with glass or plastic film to keep warm and moisturizing, with sunlight. It takes patience to sow mint with peppermint seeds, because it doesn't germinate as fast as cabbage and radish, and it takes a lot of patience to wait.

Time and method of planting peppermint seeds

1. Peppermint seed planting time

Peppermint is not strict on soil, but it is better to use loam or semi-sandy loam which is deep, loose and fertile and rich in organic matter. The suitable growth temperature is 20 ℃ ~ 33 ℃. Saline-alkali land and low-lying land are not suitable for planting. But fertile loam and sandy loam are better. There should be plenty of sunshine, so mint should not be planted in shady places.

Peppermint is generally propagated by rhizome, but also by cutting and seed propagation. The latter two methods grow slowly, are easy to mutate, and are generally used less. It can be propagated by rhizome, either in spring or before winter. Spring planting is mostly carried out from late March to early April, and before winter planting is carried out around late October.

2. Peppermint seed planting method

Sowing method

Use loose and well-drained fertile soil, water thoroughly before planting, and pay attention to evenly sowing seeds on the soil layer.

Because the seeds of mint are very small, there is no need to cover the soil. The moisture of the soil should be maintained properly, and a small spray can be used to spray and moisturize the seeds.

Sow seeds in an environment of about 20 ℃, be careful not to exceed 25 ℃. If the temperature is lower than 20 ℃, it can be covered with cling film to raise the temperature and keep moisture. When high temperature in summer, seeds should be placed in shade to cool down, because too high temperature is easy to make seeds short of water, in the case of no rooting, we can only rely on artificial water to ensure normal development.

If covered with cling film, the seeds should be removed in time after germination and moved to a place where appropriate light can be received.

Planting should not be carried out until the seeds grow 5-6 leaves. Generally, a small seedling should be planted in each hole, first straighten the seedling, straighten out the roots, then fill the soil and compact it, and water it thoroughly at one time.

After the seedlings grow for a period of time, apply an appropriate amount of liquid fertilizer.

Soil

Peppermint planting soil selection has certain requirements, it is generally best to choose sandy loam or alluvial soil for planting, before planting to carry on the soil pH test, the pH is too large can not be planted, at the same time the planting land can not appear low-lying or stagnant areas, the drainage system should be more perfect, the land should be deep ploughing, but also pay attention to loose soil and soil cultivation, so as not to consolidate the land and affect the growth of mint.

Temperature

Peppermint is a kind of plant that likes warmth and is tolerant to low temperature and high temperature. under normal circumstances, it is best to grow in an environment with a temperature of about 25 to 30 degrees. At the same time, it should be noted that the lowest temperature should not be lower than 15 degrees below zero, otherwise it will freeze to death. But in most parts of our country, it is rarely able to reach minus 15 degrees, so there is no need to worry that it will freeze to death. But in order to make mint grow better and faster, the most suitable temperature is between 20 and 30 degrees, so we can regulate the temperature manually.

Fertilizer application

The growth of mint needs a lot of nutrients, because it is mainly to promote the growth of branches and leaves, as well as to promote its reproductive efficiency, so it is basically based on nitrogen fertilizer, which usually needs to be applied every other month or so. This can maintain the vitality of peppermint, during this period can also apply some phosphate fertilizer, potash fertilizer and so on, if it is sold as a potted plant, it is more necessary to apply fertilizer before sale. This can maintain the green and plant type of peppermint, which can improve the economic benefits of peppermint.

Watering

Peppermint's demand for water needs to be strictly controlled. It is suitable to grow in a relatively humid environment, but it also has certain drought tolerance. In order to increase the yield of peppermint, it needs to be watered many times in the whole growth process. In its seedling period, it generally needs to be watered every half a month or so, and it needs the most water in the middle growth period. It generally needs watering every five to seven days.

Pruning

If we are engaged in mint culture for many years, we need to build mint, which can not only increase the yield of mint, but also improve the quality of mint. Mature mint leaves can be harvested in batches at the right time so that they can be harvested many times in a year, and the quality of the collected mint leaves is also excellent, but if there is no timely harvest, then the fragrance of the old mint leaves will not be strong. Naturally, the quality has declined.
