Garlic is the general name of garlic plants, belonging to the genus Allium of Liliaceae, is a semiannual herb, edible, can be used as seasoning and medicine, and even has anti-cancer effect. Garlic was introduced into China from the Western regions in the Qin and Han dynasties. After years of artificial cultivation and reproduction, garlic has become a common ingredient or seasoning at home. So what is the method of growing garlic?

Garlic likes to be cold and cool. It is suitable for growth in an environment of minus 5 degrees Celsius to 26 degrees Celsius. It has a strong ability to keep out the cold and is very suitable for overwintering. However, garlic has higher requirements for sunshine, which can only grow stems and leaves in short days, while garlic that completes spring flowers can only differentiate flower buds and scales in the environment of more than 13 hours of long sunshine and high temperature. Garlic likes wet, not drought-resistant, like loose and breathable, rich in organic matter, strong water retention and drainage soil.

In terms of garlic cultivation, there are the following points to pay attention to:

1. Land preparation and seed selection

Garlic likes soil that is loose and permeable, rich in organic matter and strong in water retention and drainage. Before soil preparation, base fertilizer should be applied first to make the soil more fertile and soft, so that garlic can get better growth. Try not to continuous cropping when planting garlic, otherwise it is easy to produce diseases and insect pests. In seed selection, garlic varieties with high disease resistance and high yield should be selected, and garlic cloves with no gloss and uniform size should be selected.

2. Sowing seeds

The most suitable time for garlic sowing is to make the plant grow to five to six leaves before overwintering, when the plant has the strongest cold resistance, will not be frozen to death in the cold winter, and can lay a good foundation for the plant to pass through vernalization smoothly. therefore, the Yangtze River basin and the areas south of the Yangtze River generally choose to sow in the middle and last ten days of September, while the autumn temperature in the north is relatively low and relatively cold. Garlic seedlings are difficult to survive the winter, so they are usually sown in early spring.

3. Field management

Garlic needs more water and likes soft and fertile soil. Generally, it needs to be watered four times during the whole growth period. After sowing, seedling stage, moss stage and bulb expansion stage. In addition to watering, fertilization is also an indispensable part of garlic planting, the principle of fertilization is based on base fertilizer, supplemented by topdressing. The base fertilizer should be applied before soil preparation, and the fertilizer should be evenly mixed with the soil during deep ploughing. Because the growth period of garlic is long and the root system is shallow, timely topdressing can ensure the nutrition needed for the growth of garlic. Topdressing is mainly nitrogen fertilizer and phosphorus and potassium fertilizer, and compound fertilizer can also be applied, which can be combined with glue. At the same time, weeding, pest control and other work should be carried out when applying fertilizer, which can better improve the quality of garlic.

These are the key points that need to be paid attention to in garlic planting. I hope you can master scientific planting technology and get a bumper harvest.
