The prospect of kiwifruit planting is considerable, and more and more rural entrepreneurs have joined the kiwifruit planting industry, but it is a necessary prerequisite for newcomers to master kiwifruit planting technology, such as how to divide kiwifruit trees into male and female. Do male trees need to be grafted if they want to bear fruit?

First, how do kiwifruit trees divide male and female?

1. Look at the characteristics after flowering

(1) flowering time: normally, the male flowers of kiwifruit bloom earlier than the female flowers.

(2) the appearance of flowering: the male flower will have pollen at the beginning of flowering, but the flower is smaller, while the female kiwifruit tree has larger flowers, and there is no obvious pollen trace on the petals at the beginning of flowering. In addition, the hairs of female flowers are less than those of male flowers, and the leaves are larger than those of male flowers.

2. Look at the budding eyes

Most of the male kiwifruit bud eyes show a state of "protruding exposure", while the female kiwifruit bud eyes are mostly "sunken inward", but what we are talking about here is most cases, except for very few special varieties and mutations.

3. Look at the branches

The distance between buds on the branches of male kiwifruit is relatively narrow, while that of female kiwifruit is larger.

4. Look at the size of the leaves

Generally speaking, the leaves of male kiwifruit trees are "thick, small and round", while those of female kiwifruit trees are "thin, large and pointed".

Second, does the fruit of kiwifruit need to be grafted?

Kiwifruit as a dioecious fruit tree, if only the male tree can not bear fruit, and only the female tree can set fruit, but the fruit quality is not good, so now many people are artificially cultivating kiwifruit. A certain proportion of male trees will be cultivated in the orchard as pollination trees to let mother trees pollinate.

However, it is not that public trees cannot bear fruit at all, but they just need to do "grafting" treatment. In fact, grafting is the most common way of reproduction in kiwifruit planting, which can be either "grafted" or "spliced".

Points for attention in grafting of kiwifruit male trees:

1. Grafting time: in order to ensure the survival rate, the grafting time should be selected, usually from late February to early March every year.

2, grafting location: low grafting is not recommended, so the grafted kiwifruit has poor resistance to freezing and disease, and it is best to carry out high grafting about 1 meter from the ground.

3. Melting wax and capping: if it is a young tree, it is best to melt wax and seal the cut scion before budding, and then carry on the grafting.

4. Post-grafting management: must be watered in time after grafting, and control the temperature, and be prepared to prevent "late spring cold". For example, you can cover a small plastic bag at the grafting site to keep warm and prevent cold. Finally, it is necessary to unbind in time when the new tip is about 50 years old.

Generally speaking, if you are going to buy kiwifruit seedlings to plant, then you must buy some mother trees and public trees, which is conducive to pollination and fruit setting.
