According to the national grain production data released by the National Bureau of Statistics, the total grain output in 2015 was 621.435 million tons (1.24287 trillion jin), an increase of 14.408 million over 2014.

There was another bumper grain harvest in 2015.

Hou Rui, a senior statistician in the Rural Department of the National Bureau of Statistics, interprets the situation of grain production.

According to national grain production data released by the National Bureau of Statistics, the country's total grain output in 2015 was 621.435 million tons (1.24287 trillion jin), an increase of 14.408 million tons (28.82 billion jin) or 2.4% over 2014. Of this total, the sown area of grain in the country was 113340.5 thousand hectares (1.700107 billion mu), an increase of 617.9 thousand hectares (9.269 million mu) or 0.5 percent over the previous year. The average per hectare yield of grain crops in the country was 5482.9 kg (365.5 kg / mu) per hectare, an increase of 97.8kg (6.5kg / mu) per hectare, or 1.8 per cent, over the previous year.

The main reasons for the increase in sown area are as follows: first, the CPC Central Committee and the State Council attach great importance to grain production, the central finance continues to strengthen support for farmers, and promptly allocates various subsidy funds such as grain direct subsidies and improved seed subsidies in 2015, thus stabilizing farmers' expectations of grain income. Second, the adjustment of agricultural planting structure. As the planting of cotton and rapeseed is labor-consuming and time-consuming, and the comparative benefit is low, some areas have reduced the planting area of cotton and summer harvest rapeseed and expanded the planting area of winter wheat, corn and other grain. For example, the cotton sown area in some parts of Jianghuai has decreased by nearly 30%. The increase in grain production due to the expansion of sown area is about 6.7 billion jin, which contributes 23.1% to the increase in grain production.

The main reasons for the increase in grain yield per unit area are as follows: first, the agrometeorological conditions are good and the disasters are relatively mild. Since last winter and this spring, the accumulated temperature, rainfall and cumulative sunshine hours of more than 10 ℃ in major grain producing provinces are generally higher than those in the previous year. Although the periodic heavy precipitation in some parts of the south and the drought in some parts of the north have caused local disasters, the national agrometeorological disasters are generally mild. Second, the area of high-yielding crops has increased. In 2015, the sown area of corn increased by 993.2 hectares (14.898 million mu) over the previous year, an increase of 2.7 percent, driving the national grain yield per unit area to increase by 1.3 percent. Third, agricultural science and technology is strongly supported. In 2015, various localities continued to strengthen investment in agricultural science and technology, continuously increase the breeding of improved varieties and the popularization and application of soil testing formula, and provide soil testing formula fertilization technical services free of charge to 190 million farmers. Fourth, agricultural production measures are effective. Especially after the disaster occurred in some areas, multi-departments worked together to strengthen the monitoring and early warning of meteorological disasters and carry out unified prevention and control of diseases and insect pests, which effectively reduced the losses of disasters. Due to the increase in per unit yield, the grain production was increased by about 22.1 billion jin, contributing 76.9% to the increase in grain production.
