First of all, prepare a suitable lotus root field, and the water depth should be suitable. Then select the appropriate lotus root species to accelerate budding, and choose the right time to plant after budding. When planting, dig the hole first, then leave the tail of the lotus root out of the soil, and bury the end of the lotus root bud down. Do not rush to water after planting, the soil can be properly watered when the soil is slightly dry, and the management work can be done in the later stage.

1. Lotus field

To prepare a suitable lotus root field, the soil should choose slightly acidic or nearly neutral clayey soil with deep soil and rich organic matter, and the fertile paddy field is better. If it is shallow water lotus root, low-lying fields, general paddy fields or rice fields with a water depth of 10-30cm are required, and the maximum depth does not exceed 80cm. If it is deep-water lotus root, the water level is 30-60cm, the deepest is not more than 1m, which is suitable for cultivation in ponds, bays and lakes.

2. Lotus root species

Choose the mother lotus root or fully mature lotus root with full head, complete neck bud, enlarged lotus root, small lotus root node, fat and sturdy back and bright color. After the selection, sprouting will be carried out for about 20 days, and the lotus root buds will grow to 10 cm and can be planted.

3. Planting

It is planted in the north in early May and in the south of the Yangtze River from March to early April, preferably in the morning on a sunny day. When planting, dig the pit first, the size and depth of the pit should be determined according to the size of the selected lotus root buds. Then, leave the tail of the lotus root out of the soil, and bury one end of the lotus root bud down to ensure that there is a leakage at both ends of the head and tail when adding water. The newly planted lotus root buds should not be watered in a hurry, but can be watered properly when the soil is slightly dry.

4. Management

Lotus root is an aquatic plant, the whole growth period can not be separated from water, especially in summer, there can not be no water in the pond, lotus root fields generally keep 5-6cm shallow water in the early stage, 15-16cm water depth in the middle stage, and shallow water in the later stage. The lotus root likes fertilizer and needs more fertilizer, but it can not be fertilized too much. Human urine fertilizer should be added for 2 or 3 times during the growth period of lotus root. Fertilizer should be applied once at the beginning of standing leaves, the second time when 5 leaves are grown, and the third time when it begins to bear lotus roots. Generally, the grass should be pulled manually in the middle and last ten days of May, do not use pesticides to weed.

5. Diseases and insect pests

The common diseases of lotus root are lotus leaf Fusarium wilt, lotus root virus disease, lotus root black spot disease, lotus root rot disease and so on. insect pests include aphids, Spodoptera litura, diamondback moth and so on. Water maggots can suck the juice of lotus root, stem and leaves and can be killed with lime.
