Morphological characteristics

Erect herbs, up to 1 m tall. Roots slender, ca. 2-3 mm thick. Stems distally and branches longitudinally, branches sometimes with very narrow wings. Leafy branches usually clustered every 3-4, narrowly striate, falcate, base subsharply trigonous, distally flattened, 1-4 cm long and 0.7-1 mm wide; scalelike leaves sublanceolate, base unarmed. Flowers every 2-4 axillary, yellowish green; pedicels very short, ca. 0:5-1 mm; male flowers: perianth 2-2.5 mm long; filaments of stamens not Adnate to perianth segments; female and male flowers nearly equal. Berries about 6 mm in diameter, red when ripe, usually with 1-2 seeds. The flowering period is from May to June and the fruiting period is from August to September.

Distribution range

It is cultivated in China's coastal areas and Heilongjiang, Jilin, Liaoning, Hebei, western Henan, Shandong, Shanxi, Shaanxi (south-central) and Gansu (southeast). It is also distributed in Japan, Korea and Siberia of the Soviet Union.
