Dragon fruit is a kind of tropical and subtropical fruit, which is grown in Hainan, Guangxi, Guangdong and other provinces in China. People usually call dragon fruit red dragon fruit, green dragon fruit, immortal honey fruit, jade dragon fruit and so on. Because it looks like a red ball of fire, it gets the name "dragon fruit". This fruit, with its fragrant taste and mild texture, has always been favored by consumers. So when does dragon fruit usually mature and come on the market? What kind of planting techniques can make the dragon fruit more high-yield and high-quality?

First, the time when dragon fruit is on the market

The dragon fruit takes about 40 days from flowering to picking, and can be picked when the fruit changes from green to purplish red. The ripening period of dragon fruit is generally from May to November every year, that is to say, people can see dragon fruit in nearly half a year.

II. Planting techniques of dragon fruit

1. Time element

The planting time of dragon fruit is generally chosen from March to April in spring, the temperature during this period is more suitable, there will not be too low or too high temperature, dragon fruit can sprout and grow smoothly.

2. Soil elements

The dragon fruit has a strong adaptability, whether it is mountain, dry land or wasteland, it can grow and survive. But if the soil conditions are more suitable for the nutrients needed by the dragon fruit, then the dragon fruit will also grow more vigorously. Generally speaking, the micro-alkali soil with loose soil, fertile soil, rich humus and better fertilizer and water conservation is more suitable.

3. Lighting elements

Dragon fruit is a typical light-loving plant, in a long time of light, sunny environment, photosynthesis will be more exuberant, so dragon fruit can grow faster.

4. Watering work

Although the dragon fruit is resistant to drought, it still needs sufficient water in the process of growth. If the planting land of dragon fruit is relatively short of water, it will affect the growth of dragon fruit, and it may even stagnate growth and gradually shrink the flesh stem. Of course, this does not mean that the more water, the better, if too much water, it will also cause pitaya root rot, and even plant death.

5. Fertilization work

The growth rate of dragon fruit is fast, so it needs to supply sufficient fertilizer during the whole growth cycle of dragon fruit.

In the early stage of growth, nitrogen fertilizer should be applied to help the plant grow rapidly, and in the middle and later stage of plant growth, nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium fertilizer should be applied evenly, so as to increase plant photosynthesis and better promote the flowering and fruiting of dragon fruit.

6. Planting method

There are generally two planting methods of dragon fruit, one is seed planting method, the other is cutting planting method.

(1) seed planting method

The method of seed planting is to deal with the seeds. The pulp of the fully ripe dragon fruit can be taken out, the seeds can be completely separated from the pulp and dried. After that, the dried seeds can be sown on the surface of the soil, then spray water in time and cover it with plastic film. The seeds will germinate in about 3-5 days, during which time you need to lift the plastic film every day to spray water.

(2) cutting planting method

Cuttage planting is usually carried out in spring. Cut off sturdy branches and put them in the shade to dry the wound. Wait for the wound to dry and heal before cutting into the prepared soil. At this time, sticks and other tools can be used to give a support to the branches. Water it again 10 days later, and it will gradually take root in about half a month.

7. Pruning work

In order to ensure the yield of dragon fruit next year, every time the dragon fruit is picked, the fruiting branches need to be reduced so that it can sprout again.

8. Pest control

The dragon fruit in the seedling stage is more vulnerable to snails and ants. In view of this situation, insecticides can be selected for control. In adulthood, the disease of dragon fruit will be less. In addition, in the environment where the temperature is too high and the humidity is more serious, pitaya is also prone to diseases, so trimethoprim can be used to control it.
