1. Cultivation time

The cultivation is best in February-March in spring, that is, after the freezing period, red bayberry is planted before sprouting, and it is better to choose cloudy or light rainy days.

2. Growth temperature

Red bayberry is resistant to overcast and likes dampness, with an average annual temperature of 15-21 ℃ and a minimum temperature of more than 8 ℃. Red bayberry is most suitable for cultivation on slopes below 500m above sea level, with ferns, rhododendrons and other index plants growing on the mountain, without stagnant water.

3. Select seedlings

The sturdy first-class seedlings with several branches and no root injury were selected. before planting, cut off the 3 leaves above the grafting interface of the seedlings to reduce water evaporation to facilitate survival and growth.

4. Cultivation

Dig planting holes before planting, which should be carried out in winter. Fish scale pits are dug on the high line, with a size of 1 meter square and a depth of 0.8 meters. Topsoil and core soil should be separated so that they can be used in layers when filling. Apply sufficient base fertilizer, 25 kg of barnyard manure (or 3 kg of vegetable cake) and 10-15 kg of coke ash per hole, plus 0.5 kg of calcium superphosphate, mix well with the soil during planting, and avoid contact between roots and fertilizer during planting. The weeds and trees around the fish scale pit should not be removed immediately, and the tall trees should be cut down after the seedlings survive.

5. Colonization

In order to improve the survival rate of red bayberry seedlings, planting should be deep rather than shallow, especially in areas with severe autumn drought. All the old scions on the rootstock should be buried in the soil, and at least 3-5 leaves on the scion should be buried in the soil, so that part of the scion can take root. If the plant is shallow and the old scion is exposed to the soil, the survival rate is low, which is the key to planting bayberry. Therefore, before the red bayberry seedlings are planted, all the leaves should be cut off, the petiole should be left, and the nylon film on the scion should be removed. If there are excavated roots, use pruning shears to smooth the wound. At the same time, attention should be paid to the fixed stem work, and the height of the center above the interface is about 25 cm.

When planting bayberry, first cover the fertilizer with a layer of topsoil 15-20 cm thick, which is the soil in direct contact with the root. Put down the seedlings, straighten out the roots, fill the topsoil step by step, and cover the topsoil 20-30 cm above the ground, then water it 1-2 times, and then cover a layer of loose soil.

6. Watering

In the first year after planting, the root system of red bayberry is underdeveloped, and it is easy to die from drought during high temperature and drought from July to August, so early prevention and drought resistance should be carried out. Where there is a source of water, it is feasible to irrigate or water; it can also cover 5-10 cm thick grass in the fish scale pit when the ground is wet after plum production (July) to prevent drought.
