Jinshinan is a precious wood unique to China. Representative species nanmu (scientific name: Phoebe zhennan S. Lee): formerly known as "Zhen Nan". Large trees, more than 30 meters high, with straight trunks. Branchlets usually slender, angled or nearly Terete, grayish yellow or grayish brown villous or pubescent. Leaves leathery, elliptic, 7-11 cm long and 2.5-4 cm wide, glabrous above or pilose along the lower half of midvein, densely pubescent below, cymose panicles very spreading, hairy, 3-6 flowers per umbel, equal in size, 3-4 mm long. Fruit elliptic, leathery, closely adherent, both surfaces pubescent or outside puberulent. The flowering period is from April to May and the fruiting period is from September to October.

Wild or cultivated; wild ones are common in broad-leaved forests below 1500 m above sea level. Mainly produced in Sichuan, western Hubei, Yunnan, Guizhou and provinces south of the Yangtze River. According to records, of all the golden nanmu, Sichuan's Jinshinan is the best. It is a second-class protected plant in China.

In history, golden nanmu was specially used in the architecture and furniture of royal palaces and a few temples.
