We all know that eggplant needs a large amount of fertilizer during the growing period, and reasonable topdressing is beneficial to increase its yield. So, can I use urea to topdressing eggplant?

Can I use urea for topdressing eggplant?

Yes, but we should pay attention to control the dosage, and the amount should be controlled within 30 kilograms per mu. If the dosage is too large, it will cause ammonia damage to eggplant leaves and fruits.

2. Key points of fertilization for eggplant

1. Heavy application of base fertilizer

Eggplant is a fertilizer-loving and fertilizer-tolerant crop with a long growth period. In order to obtain high yield, it is necessary to apply sufficient base fertilizer before planting. The amount of base fertilizer accounted for about 1x3-1ap2 of the total fertilizer application. Generally, 5000-7000 kg of high-quality rotten organic fertilizer (chicken manure, horse manure, cow manure, pig manure, etc.) is applied per mu, and it is best to apply 2 kg to 3, and 1 to 3 with an appropriate amount of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium compound fertilizer 25-50 kg, and then concentrate on planting ditch or planting hole.

2. Topdressing fertilizer by stages

Eggplant has a long fruiting period and needs to be fertilized many times. The absorption and nourishment of eggplant increases rapidly after flowering, so the important period of topdressing is from "door eggplant staring" to "four doors" harvest. During this period, fertilizer can be applied every 10-15 days, 15-20 kg of ammonium sulfate or 7.5-10 kg of urea per mu, or 500-600 kg of rotten human feces. Fertilization methods can be ditch application, hole application or flushing application with water. If it is cultivated in high temperature season in midsummer or in greenhouse, flushing application with water should be avoided to prevent volatilization of effective components, resulting in reduced fertilizer efficiency and fertilizer damage.

3. Spraying fertilizer outside the root

Eggplant leaves yellowing due to nitrogen deficiency and magnesium deficiency are easy to turn green and yellow near the main vein of magnesium deficiency, and the yield is often affected by fallen leaves. In order to make up for the deficiency of root fertilization, foliar fertilizer can be sprayed with urea, potassium dihydrogen phosphate and magnesium sulfate according to the growth of eggplant. Usually once every 7-10 days, spray 2-3 times continuously.

4. Apply phosphate fertilizer

Eggplant needed more phosphorus at seedling stage, and the amount of phosphorus absorbed by eggplant decreased relatively in fruit expansion stage and fruiting peak stage. Therefore, the application of more phosphate fertilizer at seedling stage can promote the survival of rooting and planting, which is beneficial to plant growth and yield. After eggplant enters the peak growth period, due to the reduction of phosphorus requirement, little or no phosphate fertilizer should be applied, so as not to promote the seed development in the fruit, cause pericarp hardening, quality decline, and affect the commercial value of eggplant.

5. Apply less chemical fertilizer

In the process of fertilizing eggplant, we must grasp the principle of fertilization based on organic fertilizer and supplemented by chemical fertilizer. The amount of chemical fertilizer should not be too large, especially nitrogen fertilizer, so as to avoid the accumulation of nitrate in eggplant products due to excessive nitrogen, which is harmful to human health.

When fertilizing eggplant, we can also adjust it according to its growth situation to achieve a good harvest.
