Foxtail algae is suitable for indoor water greening and is a good material for decorating glass containers. When cultivated in an aquarium, it is often used as a mid-range and background grass. Let's take a look at the planting method of foxtail algae.

I. Propagation methods

1. Cutting: Sargassum foxtail can be cut in the growing season. Cut a robust stem segment with 2-3 nodes, usually 5-8 cm long, trim the whorled leaves on the lower node of the stem segment and insert them into the matrix, about half of the depth. The main purpose of post-insertion management is to control the temperature and humidity, keep the bed moist and the air moist, and the room temperature should be 20-25 °C, which can be potted or transplanted after 2 weeks. Foxtail algae does not have high requirements for cutting substrate, except for the most common garden soil, other substrates can also be selected, such as peat soil, perlite, sand and other commonly used solid substrates. In addition, clear water is used as cutting substrate in production, and the cutting effect is also ideal.

two。 Ramet: ramet propagation is usually carried out in April-May when the plant is changed, and the old clump is cut into several small clumps for breeding materials with a sharp knife.

3. Tissue culture: using the stem segment of fox tail algae as culture, the culture was disinfected, induced, differentiated and proliferated, and rooting culture, which could rapidly propagate fox tail alga. Tens of thousands of high quality seedlings of fox tail algae could be produced in one year.

2. Water tank

When decorating the aquarium indoors, gravel with a diameter of 3-5 mm should be selected as the cultivation substrate. If there is no such condition, coarse sand with a diameter of 1-2 mm can also be used as the cultivation substrate. Daily management should be strengthened before operation to ensure better growth of new plants. If you need to plant foxtail algae separately, the container used is usually a medium-sized aquarium. Pay attention to the location to ensure that the plant can receive the required light. First lay the cultivation substrate at the bottom of the aquarium with a thickness of 4-6 cm. You can first inject water to the half-tank, and then plant, wait until the end of the operation, then inject water into the cultivation container to the desired height.

III. Management

Foxtail algae is not strict on water quality and can be cultivated in slightly acidic to slightly alkaline fresh water with low hardness, and the salinity should not be too high. It has a large demand for fertilizer, and in the stage of vigorous growth, it can be topdressing once a week. This plant has no obvious dormancy period, so it is necessary to fertilize it in time in order to ensure its rapid growth. It can also be exposed to 2-3 hours of scattered sunlight every day; when cultivated in a lack of light, special fluorescent lamps can be used and 8-10 hours of artificial light can be given every day, so that the plant can grow more normally. Be careful not to make the light too strong, or the green moss will spread quickly. Under good management conditions, foxtail algae are not easy to get sick and are less attacked by harmful animals. This kind of plant is perennial, its seedling is rapid, take shape very quickly. As the plant grows taller, the basal leaves will age. The best viewing period can reach 3-5 months after the seedlings are planted. If the plant is not renewed, its continuous cultivation should not be more than 8 months.
