Years of practice shows that the planting of ratooning rice is a resource-saving, eco-environmental and efficient rice cropping system, which is beneficial to improve the multiple cropping index and the comprehensive production capacity of rice fields. As a light cultivation method, it has the advantages of short growth period, high daily yield, excellent rice quality, seed saving, labor saving, water saving and so on.

Since 2000, the average yield of 100000 mu of recycled rice in Youxi County, Fujian Province has been 605.9 kg per mu in the first season and 297.8 kg per mu in the ratooning season, with an annual yield of 903.7 kg per mu. It is estimated that there are 200 million mu of single-cropping rice fields in southern China, of which 50 million mu of single-cropping rice fields (more than one season of light and temperature resources and insufficient two crops) are suitable for planting ratooning rice. If they can reach the yield level of Youxi County in Fujian Province, it can increase rice production by 20 million tons per year. Combining conventional breeding techniques with molecular breeding techniques to cultivate new rice varieties with high yield, high quality, multi-resistance, strong ratooning ability and suitable for mechanized operation, interdisciplinary and cooperative research will help to further promote the application of ratooning rice in production and contribute to ensuring national food security and increasing grain production. The development of ratooning rice is a big technical reserve to ensure China's food security in the future.
