Watermelon is one of the representatives of summer fruit, the flesh is sweet, can cool down the summer heat. At present, there are also many fruit lovers who grow watermelons, so when will watermelons apply boron fertilizer?

When will boron fertilizer be applied to watermelons?

1. Basic fertilizer: generally apply before planting, turn into the soil during soil preparation, use 0.5 kilogram of borax per mu, or 3.5 kilograms of boron and magnesium fertilizer, or 15,20 kilograms of boron mud, and mix with appropriate amount of nitrogen and phosphorus fertilizer.

2. Extra-root topdressing: applied before and 10 days after flowering, 0.1%-0.2% borax solution can be sprayed on the leaf surface.

2. Cultivation techniques of watermelon

1. Land selection and preparation

The soil quality of watermelon planting land is generally relatively loose, at the same time, the water source near the planting land is more abundant, which is convenient for irrigation. Secondly, the soil fertility of the planting land is relatively sufficient, and the plots with good permeability and drainage are more suitable for growing watermelons. In addition, the land that has been planted with melons and fruits in the past three to five years cannot be used to grow watermelons. Soil preparation is usually done before winter, and then wait until spring, sprinkle with sufficient organic fertilizer, cake fertilizer, and an appropriate amount of chemical fertilizer to turn again, and finally open a ditch to make a bed, the width of the bed is generally about two to five meters.

2. Sowing and raising seedlings

The temperature at which seeds germinate is about 28 to 3 degrees, and the temperature suitable for watermelon growth is between 18 and 30 degrees. Generally, watermelon is planted in March and April every year, but the seeds need to be germinated and covered with plastic film to keep warm after sowing. Seed treatment is generally soaked in warm water or carbendazim. After the seeds grow into bud points, spread them evenly on the seedbed and wait for the seedlings to be planted after heat preservation treatment.

3. Transplanting seedlings

Generally, when watermelon seedlings grow three or four true leaves, they can be transplanted and planted. When planting, if the border is four meters wide, then one border can plant two rows of watermelon seedlings, while the border which is only two meters wide can only plant one row for so long. Rack planting can plant about 1500 to 1800 watermelons per mu on average, while creeping growth can only grow about 750 per mu, and it also depends on the fertility of the soil.

4. Field management

In addition to the usual water and fertilizer management and weeding, watermelon fields also need to be managed in terms of vine pruning, leaf picking, heart picking and shading. Three or four times of topdressing are generally needed in the whole growth process of watermelon. The first topdressing is mainly about a week after planting, mainly to promote the growth of melon vines. The second time is when the melon vine grows to about 80 centimeters to one meter. This time, it not only needs topdressing, but also needs reasonable coring to promote the growth of lateral branches. The third time is at the time of flowering, it is important to pay attention to the removal of some branches, leaves and buds around the watermelon, so as to avoid fruit drop and death, and spray foliar fertilizer at the same time. Finally, when watermelons are strong, it is mainly to promote the growth of watermelons.

5. Pest control

The most common diseases of watermelon are anthracnose, Fusarium wilt, virus and powdery mildew. These diseases are fungal diseases, so the methods of prevention and treatment are more or less the same. Generally, carbendazim or Bordeaux solution and chlorothalonil can be used for treatment. The main pests of watermelon are land tiger, aphids, melon maggots and so on. After sowing accidents, we can soak seeds with targeted agents to improve the resistance of watermelons, followed by the use of trichlorfon to control. Finally, we should pay attention to the emergence of cracked melons, mainly to strengthen the management of water and light.

When boron fertilizer is used as the base fertilizer for planting watermelon, ditch application or hole application is generally not used to avoid toxic effect on watermelon due to high boron concentration in local soil.
