Maggot culture medium can be divided into two types: one is made of agricultural and sideline scraps such as wheat bran, rice bran, distiller's grains, bean dregs, sugar dregs, slaughterhouse feet, etc., and the other is made from animal manure such as cow dung, horse dung, pig manure, chicken manure and so on. The former category is mainly to master the allocation proportion of each component, control the water content at about 60%, and the matrix should go through a drunken process of about 12 hours before receiving eggs. The latter type of substrate requires that the raw materials are short, fine, fresh and the water content is about 70%. Before use, two or more kinds of substrates should be mixed and piled in proportion, covered with thin film retting, and fermented for more than 48 hours before eggs can be collected.
