Penaeus vannamei is native to Ecuador in South America. China was first introduced from America in 1988 and is one of the three largest cultured shrimp in the world. Compared with Penaeus chinensis, Penaeus vannamei has the advantages of long breeding season, short larval rearing period, strong disease resistance, fast growth rate, strong resistance to changes in water environment, long growth life, low food requirements, long survival time out of water, high meat content and so on. Penaeus vannamei has become one of the better alternative species for shrimp culture in China. The artificial propagation technology of this shrimp is introduced below.

First, the choice of parent shrimp

Where there are conditions, the parent shrimp of Penaeus vannamei without specific virus (SPF) in the United States should be introduced. The parent shrimp should have intact limbs, normal body color, luster, no injury and no disease. The female should be 13 cm ~ 16 cm long, 12 months old to 18 months old, and the ovaries develop to Ⅲ stage. The male body is 12 cm ~ 15 cm long, and the seminal pod is milky white without blackening. The ratio of female to male is 1 ∶ 1: 2.

Second, parent shrimp cultivation

In general, parent shrimps are cultivated in outdoor ponds at low temperature for a period of time, and then moved to indoor to induce mating and spawning before reproduction. Most of the spawning ponds are round, with a diameter of 3 ~ 5 meters, a water depth of 0.6 ~ 1.2 meters, a funnel-shaped bottom, and a slope of 5% to the center.

Before entering the pond, the parent prawns were soaked in 80 × 10 / 100 × 10 / 6 bleaching powder for 3 ~ 5 minutes. After the parent shrimp entered the ripening pond from the overwintering pond with a water temperature of 16 ℃, it increased by 0.5 ℃ per day (0.3 ℃ from 20:00 to 8 o'clock, 0.2 ℃ from 8 to 20:00) to 20 ℃ for 8 consecutive days. After 2 days of constant temperature, the rate of increase was 0.5 ℃ per day to 26 ℃. During the cultivation period, the water quality index was 23 ℃ ~ 26 ℃, light 5mg / L, pH7.7~8.3, salinity 27032, ammonia nitrogen.
