Diagnosis and treatment of selenium deficiency in breeding Dairy cows

The affected animals showed depression, loss of appetite, weight loss, curled hair, standing alone, unstable standing, lying like lying, dyskinesia, muscle tremor, limb numbness, waist and back arching, sharp decline in milk production, severe cases, loss of appetite, cessation of milk production, lying on the floor, shallow breathing or wheezing, finally horn arch reversal, convulsion, heart failure and death, the course of disease was about 2 days.

(2) the change of dissection

In 3 cadavers, all the bodies were emaciated, the hair was curled, the muscles were reddish brown, and the heavy ones were yellowish white, especially the medial muscles of the upper extremities, the longissimus dorsi and the muscles below the hip joint. Its cross section shows white stripes or spots, the muscle is dry, and the myocardium near the epicardium has gray-white stripes parallel to the muscle fibers. The liver is slightly swollen and the surface is smooth. The spleen is grayish white with sharp edges. The renal capsule is easy to peel off, the boundaries of the three layers are clear, the lungs are swollen, there is foamy fluid outflow from the trachea and bronchi, the rumen is filled with gas, there are a small amount of thin contents, intestinal emptiness and mild congestion of intestinal mucosa.

3 histopathological examination

Skeletal muscle: disorderly arrangement of muscle fibers, obvious widening of the distance between muscle fibers, and full of connective tissue, most of muscle fibers horizontal and longitudinal lines disappeared, muscle fibers broken, sarcoplasmic dissolution. Most of the muscle nuclei were stained, disintegrated or disappeared.

Myocardium: most of the myocardial fibers were broken, the transverse striations disappeared, the sarcoplasma dissolved, most of the nuclei disintegrated and disappeared, the distance between muscle fibers widened and the connective tissue proliferated.

Liver: hepatocyte degeneration with a large number of red blood cells in the sinus.

Kidney: degeneration of renal tubular epithelial cells.

Spleen: thickening of capsule, increase of trabeculae and enlargement of white pulp.

Lungs: hyperemia, edema.

Small vessels: observation of small vessels in hepatic portal area, splenic trabecular artery, heart and lung showed intimal edema and partial dissolution and disappearance of sarcoplasma of media smooth muscle.

According to the changes of clinical and autopsy, selenium deficiency was diagnosed preliminarily.

4 treatment

Timely take selenium supplement measures, 0.1% sodium selenite vitamin E injection, according to 10mL/ intramuscular injection for the first time, whole group treatment, serious patients with cardiotonic fluid replacement, a week later again intramuscular injection. After taking the above measures, the condition of the diseased animals improved and recovered well.
