According to the age, the thrush can be divided into four stages: ① "nest" refers to the young bird that has just hatched and has not left the nest, and will not fly;② "soft hair" refers to the young bird whose feathers have grown after the end of the "nest";③ "Qi Mao" refers to the young bird after the "soft hair" bird molts in the following year. The term "old hair" refers to adult birds after 2 years old. The first three stages are young birds. Most of the thrushes sold in the market are newly caught wild birds, called raw birds. Those who have no breeding experience should choose mature birds. After domestication mature birds have the following characteristics: feathers have friction scars, long claws, dark skin luster, see people are not afraid, calm attitude, sing freely, singing non-stop. Wild thrush in the cage look uneasy, even chaos flutter chaos bump, do not sing.

Beginners can also choose young birds to raise, because young birds are more mild, easy to raise and tame, it is best to choose feathers have long Qi "soft hair" or "Qi Mao" young birds, they are in good health, more able to adapt to the environment, higher survival rate. The disadvantage is that the chirping time is short and the chirping is not melodious enough.

Bird lovers who have some experience can choose "old hair" thrush, because its mouth is better. Adult birds are impatient and difficult to domesticate. However, if domesticated,"open call"(that is, domesticated after the beginning of singing), in addition to molting season, can always sing in all seasons, and sing excited sounds.

Top-grade thrush has the following characteristics: thick mouth, round mouth peak, mouth outward extension, long nostrils, round eyes, vertical ears, do not look up, do not fall to the bottom of the cage, do not drill the perch rod, large toe pad, thick and powerful claws, fine feather axis and light color. When chirping, you should grasp the bar strongly, the ears are vertical, the tail hooks the bar, and the male posture is Yingfa; the body will not swing from side to side, and the head will not look down (hereinafter referred to as "head down" is inferior); when chirping, the tail should be slightly hooked down, and cannot swing up and down or tilt upward; the feathers should be close to the body, and the tip of the mouth is long and pure in color. Good song combative thrush has "body like gourd tail like piano, neck such as cut bamboo mouth such as nails, add a pair of beef tendon legs, a cage nine birdcage" selection song formula.

Generally only male birds, not female birds. Because the male birds melodious sounds, while the female birds are monotonous pheasant calls to listen to, not by the breeder's welcome. The male and female identification of thrush is more difficult. The following briefly introduces several methods:

Listening: This is the most reliable method of identification. Male birds sing complex and varied, passionate melodious tone, rich in rhyme; female birds sing monotonous, pheasant listen.

Look at the head: male bird head large and long, broad forehead, nearly square, thick black neck and straight forward, mouth stout, mouth ridge is round, nostrils long, exposed part is large, mouth must be dense slightly outward exhibition; female bird head round and small.

Look at feathers: female feathers are more beautiful, male birds are worse. The male feathers are thin and pale, the ends of the main wing feathers are pointed, and the female is round and blunt.
